You dont need to take the beam off and you can do it on your own but this shows whats involved

No point checking. The cars old enough to need them doing. Just change them. The symptoms you describe point to them being shot.

sh!t job to do....sliverline do a tool to get them out and back in again for about £25.00.
If your going to change them get the tool.
I used the wheel off my trolley jack,a few sockets,and 12mm stud bar and nuts to do mine and lots of swearing
