My car at 12800miles, just a little over year now and its say it needs a service in 500 miles.I had the oil and filter changed at 5000miles by JKM.
Im on the long life regime so on my service booklet it says im not due for my 1st service until 2012. So im planning to do it myself which I don't mind...or should I just give it to the dealers to sought out? I also took up on the 3 years for £250

If I were to do it myself where would one buy the oil filters? will this do even if its listen under the mk5? http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1180

Hi there, you say the car is just over a year old, you took up the (£250) 3yr service plan yet you want to do an oil service yourself!?!
2 things spring to mind...

1. you've wasted £250.
2. your VW 3yr new car warranty will be invalid as there will be no 'reputable service agent' stamp in the service history log book!

and
3. I think VW state that to take up the 3yr service plan, the vehicle must be on time/interval service?? I think??

OP, are you ok?
Agree with Andy.
Why do manual labour and get your hands dirty when you've already paid for it?

yeh the time for its first service that is written in the service booklet shows that it is to be in 2012 and doesn't state distance...so i am i wrong that the long life service regime is at 20k or 2 years which ever comes first, my car isn't either off them

so im supposed to just take it too them and asked for it to be serviced when it states that it's not ment to be until 2012?

andyr, despite not giving himself the best introduction to the forum, has hit the nail on the head.
I'm a little confused myself as to why you'd spend £250 on a service pack and then get the oil changed at 5000 miles by an indie anyway. JKM may well be one of the best indies out there but if you were planning on visiting them anyway why not save the £250 in the first place?

If you're planning on keeping the car way past the end of the warranty then by all means get the engine serviced as often as possible as this will be the best insurance you can get for a long engine life, obviously subject to 1001 other variables that can rear their ugly heads in the meantime.

But if you're only going to keep the thing a few years just stick to VWs service schedule. When you are part ex'ing a car everyone wants to see VW stamps in the book, if you are selling privately they want to see likewise. If you have any warranty claims you will have far less hassle if your car has been looked at by VW dealers and they can find everything they want to see on their database.

So all I can say is read the T&Cs on the service agreement and stick by them. If you want to drop the oil in the meantime between scheduled services then by all means go ahead, but do it yourself and save a few quid.

Hi andyr and welcome to the forum btw

Hi andyr and welcome to the forum btw

DOH! Yeah, sorry, jumped in a bit soonish  :embarassed:
Read the post and just *had* to respond!
I'll have to introduce meself ASAP in another thread, don't want to hijack this one....

Anyhow, recently acquired a less than year old GTD, 10,500 mls, with service book that says its on longlife service, I paid for the 3yr service plan (which is £350 now BTW - got £100 off, so only £250 paid) and the salesman stated the car was on time/distance, so I was confused until I checked out the onboard readout that says its due in 9,500 mls, so they must have changed it to time/distance before I took ownership.....
What I'm saying to Endy is... Check the onboard display and see what it says about the next service, if it's around 10K from the last one, then I'd say its on time/distance.

And thanks for the Welcome Exonian

You'll soon get used to the war that goes on in this part of the forum, unless you've spent a bit of time reading threads on here already and will already be familiar with our 'style'

I'm another who dosen't understand why you have paid up front for a service plan, but are paying again by getting it serviced elsewhere.

Also, do you know if long life oil was used when you had it changed at 5000 miles?

I think as you have paid for it, you would be well advised to let VW do your servicing at least while it is still under warranty. After 3 years old, you have to question the extra expense of dealer servicing, although I'm having a few issues regarding the corrosion warranty due to my 7 year old Passat not having a full dealer history (but that's another story for another day)
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

1st Service with Time and Distance is : 10,000 miles or 12 months from purchase (whichever comes FIRST)

1st Service with Long Life is when your MFD says so (it will count down from around 1000 miles away).  The mileage can vary considerably depending on your driving style / type of roads etc...   With me (lots of town driving) it was around 9400 miles    ....  but I was on T&D with the service plan so waited for 10,000

I would strongly advise getting it serviced at a VW dealer at the scheduled time for at least the first three years for a number of reasons :-

1.  Maintaining full warranty without question
2.  Free servicing with your £250 service plan
3.  Courtesy car provided by VW UK for any long repairs  (I once got turned down due to one service being 2000 miles late)
4.  Easier to part exchange / sell and probably for more £££ (especially to VW dealers)

A little true story  :-

I once had a three and a half year old Passat W8 up for sale in Autotrader and no one was buying.  Eventually a VW dealer down south called me and asked me it had a full VW Service History (which it did).  Once confirmed that it had he bought the car there and then over the phone
