Why are diesels heavier?

I have a Mk3 TDi engine sat on my garage floor and I also have a 16v abf engine sat right next to it!
I have manhandled both of them and they weigh approx the same!

Wanna come weigh them Wayne?

Why bring mk3's in to it, ABF is a heavy lump so yes it would be about the same as a TDI, 8v engine is lighter.

All I know is that a derv block compared to petrol of a similar capacity is slightly heavier due to a heavier cast block that is required to cope with the much higher compression, by how much I have no idea but it can't be that much, a few kilos surly.

Heavier?  By how much exactly Wayne, I'm curious.  Curious to know how much heavier it is to warrant coilovers?  Gotta be so much heavier that a 1.8 surely?

Well my point / view is that with not knowing the weight of the engine (however it is heavier than a 1.6 / 1.8 that is for sure) it could be better to run coilovers as that way you could stick to a sensible height and not have the ballache of fitting a petrol lowering kit and finding the front springs are too soft.

   So...you don't know the weight of the derv. Yet you categorically state the derv is heavier?  How? Prove it.

I'm just curious about the weights, that's all.

Diesel engines will be heavier than the equivalent petrol engines.
I don't think proof is needed its a common known fact.
You could google it if you are curious  :lipsrsealed:

The answer is there already, saved googling it
Yes diesel engines need to be stronger to cope with much higher compression pressures.

Is the TDI an 8v by any chance, I'm guessing it is and this will explain the similar weight.
