Sounds like the relay, which I am told is no major drama to fix. Check ebay, theres always some for sale as it is a very common problem.

I THINK YOUR PROBLEM IS THE DIODE ON THE RESISTOR PACK WHICH IS FOUND ATTACHED TO THE FAN HOUSING. I HAVE REPLACED QUITE A FEW OVER THE YEARS .YOU CAN EITHER REPLACE THE COMPLETE RESISTOR  OR SOLDER ON A NEW DIODE  ( MAPLINS OR AN ELECTRICAL SHOP LIKE THEM SHOULD BE ABLE TO MATCH ONE UP )  TO REMOVE THE FAN TURN IT ANTI-CLOCKWISE AFTER RELEASING THE LOCKING TAB . CHECK FAN FOR FREE MOVEMENT THEY DO HAVE A HABIT OF SEIZING UP

yep you need a new heater resistor pack. they cost about £20 from German Swedish French

but the reason these burn out is becuase water has got into the fan itself and tightened it up. so if you just replace the resistor it will burn out again sometime down the line

so when you have the motor out of the car. soak it in WD40 and this will help free it up a good bit
