i think 8v 110bhp and the 16v 140bhp.. and the 2l 16v with EFI is 150 bhp

Buy a 90 spec 16V.  The 16V is an awesome drive.

Also, if you have the 90 spec you can do an easy upgrade to a 2.0 ABF (150 BHP ) from the MK3 as the electrics are similar.

90 spec's are identified by having the hazard switch on the steering column. Pre 90's have a switch on the dash.


As said, buy on body quality as most mechanicals are easily changed.

8v is 115 BHP
16v is 139 BHP

Same power as my mk4 and not haveing the turbo must make it better on fuel?

What are they like to insure? My mk4 is stupidly expensive!

i found my mk2 just as expensive to insure tbh but i dont have it on a specialist policy..

Well....seing as the Mk2 is Older and cheaper I would guess less to insure.  :rolleyes:

I'm 34 and pay about £260 a year.

older doesnt mean less.. it would cost a bomb for me to be insured on a old porsche if it didnt i would drive one lol

More mate. mk4 1.8t are gay 2.016v arent. was £300 more for me than the 1.8t lol thats the 180bhp variant inall!

I think you will also find that these older cars do more damage to new cars, people (Should you Hit one) due to them being so well built and this in turn pushes up the insurance costs...

Probs be about £1200. I was 19 paying £1400, have a look on classic insurance.
