mk 2 coolant temp light on dash
« on: 22 January 2011, 15:02 »
my car is a 16v, originally a 1.3. when i converted it i didnt bother using the 16v header tank with the low level sensor, as the wiring for it isnt in with the engine loom, its in the lighting part of the other loom, so couldnt be bothered for what its worth, but also, i check the oil every week and have a general poke around under the bonnet, so can always keep an eye on the water level. also, i always have the oil temp up on the mfa, and keep an eye on the water temp gauge, heater on hot, which it really is, etc etc. anyway driving earlier i got a couple of flashes from the temp light, the oil was on 96, its normally 98-100 when driving enthusiastically, so was a touch low as i was driving slow, and the water was halfway, which again is a touch low,as it normally gets up to just under the 3/4 mark before fan time. i know the gauge itself is on one of the head sensors, but if it wasnt up high surely the light wouldnt come on (if theyre connected), so im guessing its separate to this? so basically, why did the light flash, what sensor does it go back to on the 16v? not forgetting i have got the plain,no sensor  bottle.. i know its a long winded 1 but it saves many posts sayin 'what was ur oil temp' or 'what was the water temp guage sayin' or 'have you checked the coolant level' etc

if it didnt have the wiring for the level sensor what you are seeing is coolant overheat warning,. this is likely to be down to a duff temp sensor or the red/yel temp wire shorting to earth intermittantly

Right so its combined with the gauge itself then. Well I've got 3 new sensors on it from vwspares- they're spot on, and the car doesn't overheat, so ill just monitor it, see if it happens again..cheers rj was jus wondering if they're was another sensor I couldn't think of, tho I'm sure I'd remember as I did the conversion myself..

no theres just the single pin black ones on the side, plus the level sensor. but this wont be active on yours becasue it'll be bypassed. if its a pre-90 it will only work if you add a level sensor relay #43 above the fusebox, on a post-90 the level module is inside the dash but there is a wee jumper wire on the fusebox which disables it

Nah I shant be adding the bottle and sensor, as I check the level often anyway, and it doesn't lose any H20. was just annoying to see it flash, now I know where its fed from I'm not concerned as the gauge reads good.ta!
