Foam blowing out of air vents

This happens quite a lot! I asked my older brother about it (who's had a couple of GTi's and re-built one!) and he said it's just the "flaps" inside? If they're going, does that explain that when I'm on the motorway, inside my car gets boiling hot, obviously where the engine is chucked heat back and it's coming through the vents, because there's nothing there to stop it doing so!

It doesn't matter to me at the moment, but just checking its nothing to worry about! Prob a common one?

yep all the flaps inside the airbox are covered in foam, once the foam goes the flaps become useless as they have lots of holes in!

nothing to worry about then? Explains the "extra heat" inside on the motorway. Does it even when I turn all the heaters off. That'll be nice in the summer!

only worth worrying about if you are annoyed by the extra heat thing! if you take out the centre console and dash under trays, then remove all 4 vents plus the surrounds, you can remove the side vent piping and the distribution bit on the front of the airbox. from there you might just be able to reach in thru the hole on the front to repair the heat flap, but it will be a pain in the arse thats for sure.

if not you may have to remove the blower housing from the side, undo the nut behind the header tank in the bay plus a plastic nut near the a pillar and finally lever off the clips that hold the blower to the centre airbox. then i think you can get to the cold/hot flap thru there.

tbh might be easier to have the whole airbox assy off together, 2 more nuts in the engine bay plus the 2 coolant pipes on the matrix. put a couple corks in the outlets so you dont get coolant all over the carpets.

If you feel like fixing the vents come summer, its the heater box you need to remove, as per the matrix removal guides (as RJ has said above).

I used some of this stuff to re-cover my flaps (ahem), seems to be working well so far:

Yeah might be a job worthwhile in the summer. Clutch comes first at the moment though, the thrust bearing is getting bad! I know its not major but I'd rather be sweating my n*ts of than listening to that!
