MK4 Sound System

I am looking to improve the sound system in my mk4 which currently has not been changed from what the factory spewed out except for the head unit which I installed the other day (JVC KD-R901).

I don't want to spend more than £500, on front & rear speakers, along with a sub and I'm assuming an amplifier. I know nothing about anything when it comes to cars, what should I buy and how do I install it.

I personally don't see the point in rear speakers.

Try fading everything to the front. See how it sounds. Keep it faded to the front for a couple of days and see if it grows on you.

What sort of sound are you looking for? Streetbass, SQ, etc.

Ill bare that in mind, as for the sound, I dont know, I just want good quality sound and bass

Something like a 2ch around 50-70wrms a side runninga set of comps.

Then a single 10 or 12 running something like 500-800wrms. 

Jbl 75.2 is a good budget 2ch as a starting point.

Bare in mind it's 90% installation and 10% equipment. So budget gear installed well can sound awesome.

When installing the comps you want a nice solid baffle for them to sit on a try adding some sound deadening at least behind the speaker on the outer door skin. This will help with your Midbass.

It might push your £500 limit, but I would look to go Genesis profile amp, DLS comps up front, and a twin voice coil JL 10" sub (boxed) to load the amp at 2 ohms (lots of clean juicy power).

If you must run rear fill just some co-ax's of a similarly decent brand, head unit powered, would be more than sufficient, nothing more.

As B-Chi says, decent gear installed badly will sound poop, so don't skimp on cabling and invest time and affort in routing cables properly and making decent connections.

Definitely don't skip adding additional sound deadening to the doors, can be worth up to 2 or 3Db.

Long term, consider changing your head unit for something that will spew out a nicer signal. Nothing wrong with the JVC per se, but once you start running clean amplifiers and speakers it will highlight any deficiencies in the signal they're getting....

what are the standard speakers in a mk4? make, wrms, size, comps/co ax? etc

knowing what ive currently got, will help me decide wat i want to upgrade to, i want mb quarts

Sorry don't know what's oem in a mk4.

Would of thought they'd be comps though.

As for upgrading. Stick to the same size speakers for ease of installation unless your handy or there is adapters for your make of car.

Why mb quarts? Not saying there crap or great, just wondering.

thanks for the response, im just simply after a nice accoustic sound, doesnt have to be too bassy, but at the same time, i dont want it to sound hollow and distant, like most budget speakers do

mb quarts are, i believe, hand made in germany and are a sub-product of maxxsonics, which i rate highly, i already have a hifonics brutus amp in the sow car

however, as im not after a sub/amp for the golf as its just extra space/weight, i nice set of speakers will do

I can testify to german build quality. I'm running audiosystem helons. They're lovely.

I'd of thought you'd get a nice set of 6.5s in there no probs. Deaden up them doors properly and they'll sound pretty good.
