well its not pointless because the car is how i want it and is kinda sentimental too me so i wanna keep it just gain more power. and so by the looks of it the 1.4 gear box will be going then haha, just need to find a donor car now with good mileage for cheap!!

My 2 pence worth.

If your 1.4 is that good, flog it, you will get good money with it being cheap to run.

To build what you can buy is mad unless your doing something daft like not telling the insurance company.

If his shell is solid and in as good a condition as he says, then there is a point. I'd rather a solid shell and do a conversion than a poor GTI and spend months battling rust and falling off bits. People on this forum need to quit shooting down people so much   People also need to search on the topic of conversions though. That or we move the topic from the maintenance section to the main section and put it in BIG BOLD LETTERS SO THESE THREADS STOP.

What about the option of getting a GTI with a good shell?

No one is "shooting people down", just trying to teach common sense

zdebx man - how much work did you put into your 1.8 huh? Why didn't you just buy one with leather seats? Why didn't you just buy one already on borbet's? Why didn't you buy one that was already lowered?

I'd engine swap my car over buying a gti now as it's MY car and i'd pretty much resent wasting the work that i've done - as meagre as it is.

Mate you wanna swap a new lump into it, crack on. Have a look to see what people have done and the different lump swaps you can do. Have a chat to find out how much work it is, because people are right it is a lot of work to do and obviously get your insurance quotes on it with a new lump mod and see if you can afford to run it.
Project longterm Airbanger.
