Flat Subs... Any Good?
« on: 21 February 2010, 17:47 »
Hi,

In a bid to get my golf clubs in the boot of my Corrado, while still maintaining a decent sound system, I've been looking at flat and low profile subs (base tubes really).

Has anyone used one, or got an opinion?

Here are some examples:

Cheers,
Dave

I'm no expert but from what I can gather they will add extra punch to the bassier parts of your songs. However compared to a full sized sub in a normal enclosure it won't beat that. There are so many different enclosures you can get as they all provide a different sound, even when using the same sub. If there was any way of you to listen to one first that would be great, like in Halfords or a car audio shop near you?

When i went to get my first sub i looked into these. They arent really value for money. It will add more bass but not enough for what you pay for.

Pioneer used to do a sub that went inside the spare wheel. However, it was a while back. Now they do this one -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0002MNX5K/ref=asc_df_B0002MNX5K573573/?tag=ciaouk-ce-mp-21&creative=7966&creativeASIN=B0002MNX5K&linkCode=asn

£140 and it will fit under the seat. Can't say how good it is, but I'll echo the other comments generally about this type of sub - punchy moreso than bassey. Usually need a high input too (amped)....

Why not build a false floor in the boot and mount a "regular" sub in the floor (with a grille)? Only needs to be raised a couple of inches to get the cubic size.... and you'll still be able to chuck the clubs in....

FWIW, I've done the wheel arch install (using fibreglass) - granted a mk5 so maybe slightly bigger boot, but I can still get my clubs in

Unfortunately these types of sub are always a compromise on convenience over sound quality.

If you do install one get the best you can afford because you need the best driver and best quality housing with such a small unit.

If you place it under a seat then there is always problems with the sound being muffled and passengers kicking it.

Is there any room under the glovebox for a corrado?  Here is an install idea from a Mercedes 190.  The sub unit can get away with being so small because its in the cabin with your ears and can breathe!
