Battery Draining?
« on: 03 February 2010, 16:37 »
Hey guys, i bought a mk 3 8v gti 2 weeks ago, someone at some point had removed thier sound system before sale and the wiring was a bit of a mess, fortunatly the messed up side was part of an adaptor, and the old connections fitted my current JVC head unit. Since yesterday I've noticed my MFA resets when i get in the car in the morning, possibly because the bat is being drained? Also in my old car the head unit would remember the track position etc.. Now it just restarts each time. Any ideas guys? I'm not great with electrics lol

cheers in advance

If you battery was drained then the car would not start, is this happening too?

to make the HU save the settings you should just need to swap the red and yellow wires around behind the HU.

Hey thanks for the reply, sorry tekn so long to get back to you, been busy with work! Right, well yesterday i had a little look at the electrics and they were awful, im guessing one of the previous owners had wired in speakers to the rear (and done an awful bodge to the wiring) lol Well i took a look at the VW wiring diagram on here and rewired a new block connector and switched the Red and Yellow cables over (which now saves the settings and doesnt drain the battery) Thanks. The only thing that seems to be a problem now is my dash speakers are blown, what size are they? and whats the best way to get the covers off as i heard they break easy? O yea and also is there only one connection for the speakers? because i could only find one blue w/green stripe and one brown w/ red stripe, for now i've just split them to left and right speakers.

Cheers, Ben.

The dash wouldnt normally have speakers fitted...but there are large tweeters in their...the covers come off easy..theyr metal mesh n jus clip off simply. u can replace those tweeters with 10cm speakers but then ur splitting the ohms too much from the radio as those tweeters normally are bridged off the door speakers.
Why pay big bucks when you can do it yourself???

There should be 4 wires. 2 for left and 2 for right. If you get the tweeters out on both sides you will see which wires you are missing.

Having is wired as you do at the moment could cause problems with your HU.

Right, problem solved lol Well, I checked all my wires with the loom colour guide, and as far as i can see my loom at the older colour scheme. The only problem being that as far as i can see there should be 2 of each speaker colour (blue w/ green and brown w/red) but there isnt at all lol So i found 2 wires which were as far as i could see were totally different to either loom (brown w/black and green w/red) I wired them up like the old guy had on his loom and the tweeters, speakers all work great now. I'm guessing at some point he had replaced the tweeters, or maybe just the wire  :undecided: well im happy now, least i can listen to music while i drive lol anyone have any thoughts on whether its worth installing speakers in my rear doors? currently there are none. Or maybe 6x9s in the back?

don't do either if you can help it. If you can hold out for awhile and save a few more £££ then an amp and some components up front would be a much better option.

if not then 6x9's it is.
