stereo lights up, but no sound. any ideas?

Hi,
I have a 8v gti mk3 96.  It has an old sony cd player in it.  I can no longer get any sound, the stereo switches on, and all functions work, just no sound.  I thought it might be a problem with the stereo as it's old. So I put my wife's stereo in, which is fairly new, and again the same problem.  I have checked all the wires I can see, nothing looks damaged or split, and they all seem plugged in ok.

Any ideas as I have a few long trips coming up, and I need some sound.

how much do you know about car audio?

do you have a working spare speaker you could get hold of? even a house one would do?

Sorry I don't know a huge amount about car audio.  Also I can't do anything on the car at the moment, as it was towed to my mechanics today as the bloody thing would not start!! :sick:

One problem after another at the mo.
