gearbox swap??? urgent advice needed!!

basically the box on my mk3 gti 8v 1995 is on its last legs, i have been offered a box from a 1.6 cl 8v 1997 model. would this be ok, i assume i would still use the gti clutch? i assume i would get a better pull away speed but less top end? any advice/info welcome.

As far as i know the ratios are all wrong so bwould be no good.

Seems there are plenty of mk 8v's being broken at the moment, surely it would be better to get a straight swap..?

alot of people want silly money for boxes which are untested!! i am trying to find one but have been offered this one cheap.

no, 1.6 box wont do.

expect to pay £200-300 from a breakers for a second hand one, but personaly i wouldnt as its hit an miss if you get a good un or a bad un. I would invest your money wisely in something you know will last.

Mk2 16v box and clutch ftw (if you can find one which aint fcuked)

any 020 type box (1.8 2.0 8v and some tdi's use this box)

the 1.4 & 1.6 use an 084/085 box (major geekness from me  )

well update, finally found a box, from a gti, looks as thought it has been refurbed at some point due to being very clean compared to rest of engine. sadly the belt was snapped in car so could not test box but from sitting in car changing gears it fells tighter than mine and it was only £125, putting it in thursday.
