Egbert Nosh,
The Sunday Times review was written by Andrew Frankel, who is also a journalist for Autocar His review is totally at odds with his magazine's which was penned by Steve Sutcliffe. Suttcliffe is a much more respected journalist than Frankel IMHO just as Autocar is a much more respected source of auto intel than the Sunday Times. (I guess they feel a need to write something different simply to be different: never let the facts get in the way of a good story.) Autocar gives the 'Roc R a rollockingly good write up saying that it is better than the Ford Focus RS. Praise indeed. Tom Ford, meanwhile, writing in Top Gear magazine complains that the 'Roc R is a bit anodyne, but I suspect that this may have had something to do with test driving the car in Wales and on a wet, soggy day and narrowly missing a sheep. The only review I care about is Car's and this, written by Ben Barry, gives the 'Roc R 5 stars.
It looks as if the Golf R is going to be much faster 0-60 than the 'Roc R. Given that the Golf R will also have AWD and an ability to put its power down in all situations / road conditions and also that it will be Volkswagen's performance flagship, I expect it to much much better than the 'Roc R. In fact, I think that the Golf R is going to get people excited about it in a way few new cars have aroused such intense passion for a long long time.
So PEPS3 you can relax, you're going to be driving this incredibly cool machine long before many other Golf R wannabees, including yours truly.
