What do you mean by treated?
The Cam is Hardened , not sure if it is Case or through hardened although i can check that in an instant.
If it is Cased then you are right i will grind the hardness off but if it is through hardened it will be ok unless you mean it has been nitrided etc.
Still the head and bearing caps are Ali so they will allways be softer than the cam so i would not expect any wear in the remainder of the engines life.
I was planning to get it Coated with a high hardness/low friction coating any way just because it is red and i can

do you actualy need to grind the 4th bareing to make it fit ?   if you have no4 bearing you have a solid tappet head
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

N0 4 Bearing is 29mm dia and unfinished, bearing housing and cap are 26mm so three mm needs to come off
Head is standard ADY hydraulic tappet
