both lobes are shut for  TDC no1 power stroke.     one lobe is pointing forward one pintinc back      sounds like you have the wrong timeing mark
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

or perhaps the cam sprocket was fitted backwards, as danny says the lobes on #1 should look like this at tdc -> |\   /|

Ok good thinking didnt look at the back of the cam just the front.

I tried using the hole punched mark but that was putting them to the closed position I then tried the "T" mark and it got them to the photo below. I take it they need to go over to the left more so both lobes are pointing upwards

the correct mark is the punch mark on the rear face of the sprocket, and you line this up with the front of the head level with the rocker cover gasket surface :)

Cool I was looking at the right mark then :) I think the pulley may have been put back on the shaft 180 degrees out.

theres a keyway on the cam so you cant put it on 180 out, though if it was missing entirely then it could be. other thing it could be is sprocket on back to front, it has a punch mark on both faces as the same sprocket is used on the intermediate shaft :)

Well she runs! A little lumpy at idle but seems ok. Large bellow of smoke from the engine bay as all the plug gas cooked off the manifolds gave me a bloody fright lol.

Ok wasnt plus gas lol it seems she's blowing a bit and the dizzy was 2 teeth out so it was running a bit rich.

It idles very rough but levels off at 2k rpm. Done a quick vid do you think this is just ignition timing?

Thanks
