Just had my A/C serviced.., so recharge, anti-bacterial spray into vents, pollen filter etc etc... bloody freezing now.. top job well worth doing..

it wasn't smelling, but not as cool as it should be... it only had 200g of gas in it, and to fill it up is 850g...
i got a deal as it was my mate that does it..., but he normally charges £55 + vat for labour, gas and anti-bacteria spray, if a pollen filter is req'd that is extra.. if the car then leaks all the gas out - due to a hardware problem, i.e leaking rad or something, he would only charge for the gas just lost @ £30 + vat.

Mine wasnt very cold the day I bought it and really wanted air-con so has a service on it. Fantastic. Freezing cold and odourless. Well chuffed with that.

When I get my car sorted I'll be getting the A/C serviced, it's cold but not as much as it should be, would imagine it's just running out of zee gas it needs

A specialist should check for leaks first with a special dye then regas as required, otherwise your new gas goes really quickly.

all new a/c fitted cars have the dye built into the gas.., not sure if you can just put the dye into a system that doesn't already have it.... be good if you could then like you say could check for leaks with the ultra violet light before you pay to charge the system..

Yes you can, I work with air con everyday, the correct way is to drain and vac the system down, then check for leaks whilst doing a full pressure test, if all ok, regas and top up oil as required.
