Built-in memory head units...
« on: 29 May 2009, 20:37 »
Hey all, not a big visitor to this part of the forum, but here goes. I'm looking at a new head unit, one with built in memory, like an MP3 player, rather than a CD player like the Alpine IDA-x300 http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/8139/referer/rc_google.html, but I'm torn between a single-din or going balls out and getting a double din. Anyway...firstly, are there any advantages to either style?? I haven't got a car alarm, so a removable fascia would be a must, I'm not sure if removable front on doube-dins are particularly more expensive or what??  Also, if it were a double din, I'd want a buttonless, completely touch one, but at the same time, I'm not sure if that'd fit in with the rest of the interior styling, so pics of double din in a mk2 would be much appreciated.

And finally ,the original question I came here to ask, is can anyone recommend one of these built in memory head units?? I'm not looking for a ridiculously expensive unit, up to like £200?? And I'm not hooking it up to a sound system (amps/subs) just to speakers.

hi, i know you said you didn't want the alpine x300, but if you have an ipod then i would highly recommend one, i have been using one for about 3 months now as i got sick of having 200+ cds in my car and having to eject every time i wanted to change cd. i also looked into "hard drive" head units and didn't find many and what i did find were massively expensive, then there's the ballache of inserting all your cd's for them to be read to the hard drive, for you then to have to go through them all to name tracks etc. this is just what i found so hope it helps your decision

double din will be pain in the arse to make fit, you'd have to fab something up in the lower centre console i'm guessing.

single din dvd players can be found on ebay without memory but can read mp3 dvds with 4.5gig at a time on them.

jvc avx go used for buttons.

White: I didn't mean I didn't want that, I was just using it as an example of what I was after. I don't have an Ipod, I do have an mp3 player that I haven't used for months, might bring that out of retirement.

Sharpie, I've seen some fab'd where the ashtray goes, something like that would be my plan
