HOT WEATHER - car wont start (no noises at all)
« on: 02 June 2009, 18:14 »
i've spotted a pattern to my non starting problem.

it seems to do it when the weather is hot, when the car has been in the sun for hours.

when i say none start i mean nothing at all no cranking, solenoid clicking etc.

i'm pretty certain it's the ignition switch or something similar.

would it make sense that the hot weather/strong sunshine (hence very hot cabin temp) is causing some metal connection/wire to expand and therefore loose electrical connection????

anyone have experience of this sort of phenomenon???

thanks people

Ignition switch is a likely cause, but the heat shouldnt have anything to do with it.

Mine went in the winter.  lol :)

try jumping the starter motor red/black wire pin with 12v from the battery the next time it happens, use a chunky wire tho. if starter turns then its a wiring or ign switch fault, if it doesnt its the starter.  Some mk3s have an alarm module i believe? if so it could be that breaking down in the heat?

Just as a thought, try "lifting" the key when you turn it - I had this problem. I changed the key switch, but it did it again after a while so I got my auto-electrician friend to bypass it and fit a starter button. Works fine now - key to poistion 2, press button.

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

I had this problem in my mk2. It was the cnnector on the back of the ignition switch was loose, so I just plugged it in properly and all was well.
