Speedometer info.........
« on: 15 May 2009, 23:35 »
Can someone tell me what is the 'correct' speedometer unit for a '91 8v model. Mine has a 140mph max figure on the dial and I believe it is the original unit.

I'm looking for a 'correct' set of replacement clocks and have been offered a single plug (correct) set but with a speedo that has a 120mph max reading.

Am a bit confused with the various alternatives....

Any info help gratefully received.

M.

iirc you can fit  any clocks from a gti  to another gti as long as they are both on the same electrical system ( 1 or 2 plug )

you have to make sure the clocks have the same internal gearing as some cars din't  eg syncros there clocks read way off on a gti.  but pritty sure all the gti's have the same gering in the clocks check the 4 digit number at the bottom   by where it says vdo
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I think the 140mph clocks were for the 8v GTI, the 120mph clocks were for the Drivers/Ryders, and I think possibly pre-90 GTIs and the 160mph clocks were for the 16v GTIs.

they can be either 120mph or 140mph, 16v's came with 160mph clocks

As said previously as long as the internal gearing is the same and they have the same number of plugs they will work

Many thanks for your replies... presumably I will know if the gearing is the same by the code numbers on the bottom of the unit.
