All you can do is flush through with plain water, I would not fit a s/h one myself but the choic is yours.

worth checking your stat before you fit it.   had my coolant system apart yesterday and the stat decided that it wouldn't work.    ended up haveing to take the pas pump off again and change it,   am in a propper pissy with car over that
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

If it was your head gasket, then a compression test would not necesarily indicate anything. It depends on where the failure is. If it's between an oil gallery and the water jacket, then your compressions will not be affected. If the failure is between the water jacket or oil gallery and a combustion chamber, then you will get a low compression on the affected cylinder. If the failure is between two cylinders, then you will have low compressions on both affected cylinders.

half a cup of bio washin powder in the header tank will clean the oil out. i drain the system flush it with a hosepipe then fill with plain water + bio powder, run it till the stat opens then allow it to cool. drain and flush again, repeat till all the oil is gone. refill with antifreeze/water mix and away ya go.
