The later '89 on cars have the adapter on the coloumn from the factory so its adapting the earlier spline to the later one.
The reason for it is so that you can adjust the steering wheel position easier on the larger number of splines.
Its a pain in the bum to remove the adapter and a whole lot easier just to buy the later larger boss.
