MK3 VR6 speakers
« on: 10 April 2009, 22:29 »
Hi all, I`m new here and this is my maiden post lol

I`ve just a quick question, I`ve got a 1996 VR6 which I love.....BUT, the speaker setup is absolute sh*te!! It`s the original running from an Alpine h/unit. It`s ear piercing and tinny. I tried replacing the fronts with something decent, and even though the speakers were going nuts, there was no depth whatsoever, and the back is no better (mine`s a three door with the speaker in the arm rest).

Has anybody managed to get any decent sounding set-ups in these cars without a sub (I don`t want one as I put my bike in the boot every few days and a sub would be a pain in the backside)?? I don`t want earth shattering bass, just the slightest hint of some would be a good start!!

Many thanks

Are the speakers amped?

Not at the moment, as the ones in there can`t handle the headunit output so an amp would probably toast them (with any luck!!). I know that an amped system with some better speakers would be the way to go but it`s a lot of time, effort, and money just to find out that it still sounds crap-it probably wouldn`t, I just need convincing by somebody who`s done it

If I did go down this road, are there any recommendations for particular speakers / amps that work well??

Well in all honesty you will never get a decent sound amped or not with the size of those speakers in the dash! depending on what kind of sound you want ie: loads of bass, chrystel clear or just loud should determin ure choice

personally i would go with taking out ure dash speakers as these are what sound so tiny, and replace the front door speakers with either a 3 way around £30 or a 2 way if you want to add a sub aswell, a 2 way will give you better clarity especially if you go with components but they will not give you any bass at all as there made for mid and trebble! however a 3 way in ure door will not be as clear but will give u more bass as its made to!

hope this helps wont bore you anymore!

Cheers Luke

That sounds like a cheaper option. Those dash tweeters give a herendous amount of very harsh and overpowering treble!! Is it worth doing the same with the back two or just leaving them as they are, as they do sound just the slightest hint better than the fronts (which aint difficult!!)??

haha yeah tell me about it they are so harsh! well id probly just get rid of the back aswell cause they probs dont sound as harsh as ure not sat so close to them!

really sound and setup comes down to how you like it, but i would take them out cause as i say you will never get a nice sound out of a cone so small! if you want help with wich speakers and even fitting or setting up just let me know as im trying to do alot of work to get my company name around!

cheers

Put a sub in the rear archwell mate! Hardly takes up space at all.
Plenty info around here about making your own to!

I did see the article on that and it does seem to be the solution to cure all my problems in one

I`ll have a go at it and see what happens. Cheers for your post mate!!
