Mk1 Cab
« on: 12 July 2004, 07:15 »
Does anybody know if 3-point seatbelts (shoulder-strap) can be fitted to the back of an '88 GTI Cab??
Did the last-of-the-line Rivage/sportline editions come with them as standard??? -  I'm not sure on the law requirements at that age of car.
Mine currently has lap-belts which you cant fasten a child seat to!
Please Help!!!!! Cheers.

I cant see how it would be possible, as there is not a secure mounting point anywhere for the top of the belt to go.
I have have securely mounted a childs seat into the front of my cab before though.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

Mine's a J reg Rivage and I've got lap seats in the back of mine from standard, child seat goes in the front on mine.  :) Have to agree with Adam about a secure mounting point as I can't see where you'd put it.
......now officially dubless.

Agreed too...

Child seat mounts in front. When they get older (mines 4) the rear lap belts are fine (IMO).

Im no mechanic but could it not be bolted to the floor in the boot??  Just an idea. Or does it have to be above the height of the seat??
Fitlike!!!

There must be some legality as to where you can attatch it. I would have thought that the mounting point should need to be re-enforced to such a degree that a sudden pull, as in a crash, would not wrench the bolts out.

a thick plate on the opposite side of the pannel would spread the load and prevent this.
my mk1 escort had a 70mm square plate of aprox 4mm thickness on the inside of the inner sill to acheive this.

the problem with lap belts is as the upper toso goes forward the lower toso does not resulting in the possibility of ripping the internal organs and causing an internal heamorrage killing the person although they look ok externally, this has happened. have a nice day and belt up! :)

or in the case of your normal 3 point harness u might just get a sideways impact resulting in a fractured skull when u hit the roof.

A decent race harness is ur best bet, similar to a child seat  :)
