how about removing the rear wheel and having a look THEN reporting what you find?

Golf GTi Forum - help and sarcasm since 02...

Seriously though, I'd take a look at the pads first - it's possible that the friction material may have broken loose? Also check your wheel bearings, shocks and possibly the springs as applying the brakes transfers the weight towards the front - the spring might not be sitting right or could be broken.

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

if you're getting a knock then id suggest maybe loose caliper or brake pads.

Sounds like a pad moving, from memory they have spring retaining clips fitted maybe one of those has broken or failed.

Get it checked properly mate! If you are not competant yourself then get a garage to look.
Dont mess with brakes etc. most important safety feature on a car!

First thing I would check is that the wheel nuts/bolts are tight!

And yes you will get sarcastic replies if you ask questions first and think later!

funny that......
trained at a vauxhall dealership nearly 19 years ago as an auto technician.only left to join the army a year ago.
this is the first mk3 golf gti i have worked on and just wondered if there were any common faults.so as you can imagine i do know how to do wheel nuts up etc.
turns out the pads were moving in the caliper.new pads and all sorted.
