replace standard speakers
« on: 24 March 2009, 21:20 »
i want to replace my standard system in my 5 door gti Mk3, i want to keep it simple and just replace the vw speakers, no holes to cut in shelf or anything. i dont want it to shake the trim of the car but i want good sound quality with some base.

The plan is 4x door speakers and 4x tweeters( 2 in dash 2 in rear doors). i have had alook at the speakers in the dash and they have 4 wires instead of just two so im abit confused as to wat the extra wires are for.i have a sony head unit with 4x45 watts with just 1 pre out for the amp which is fine as i plan to run just 1 amp, i just want to know wats the best to approach the task.

if any body has done this and has any pointers or is there a thread on this??

Cheers

you'll have 2 tweeters in the dash and top of rear doors and 165/170mm mids in the doors (hence the 4 wires), buy some good quality components (if you want to keep the speaker covers they will need to be quite slimline).. I had sony tsg1700 which are slim (before modifying my door pods). the only issue will be bass as these won't give much (so your best to buy an amp and small sub)

im running a sony gt828u headunit with standard dash tweeters,4x jbl componants and tweeters crossovers etc, 10" active vibe sub in ported box, the sound is awesome.
set it up so the componants do the midrange, tweeters do top end and let the sub do all bass work, i know im stating the obvious but some people run heavy bass settings through the componants and fry them.

just my 10p worth
