Yeah not ready to be sensible just yet!  Ive always had petrol cars in the past.  I must admit I have driven a couple of oil burners and was a bit dissapointed with them.  I know the new diesel VW's are much better and was very interested to see what you guys had to say about them.  I only need to fill up my Gti twice a month at the moment so cost isn't too bad, but the road tax is a bit steep mind!

Saying that it will be interesting to see how things develop in the next couple of yrs, petrol prices, tax etc.  The lease on my current car runs out in 21 months time and diesel may be the only option

my wifes car was an 2008 170 gt golf diesel it got stolen last month, she has now replaced it with a gti .

the gt  was a nice car 3 door had 18's leather ed30 rear valance etc it pulled nice but always seemed boring to drive, it was doing 38/39 mpg around the villages and daily commute. now she has bought a white 2006 mk5 gti and loves it. never heard her say that about the gt. must admit i much prefer the gti and the sound of the exhaust. much more of an interesting car to drive. the gti is doing 30 mpg on the same runs

ps i had a tsi golf plus for this weekend courtesy car not really very powerfull but ok, it was doing 38mpg i was impressed

I average 54mpg on my 31 mile commute to work along the A14 in my mk5 GT TDi... def more economical than my mk2 GTi, but a less entertaining drive. I have got my mfa reading 59mpg one time stuck behind a lorry
