The only reason people get a diesel is because they either do loads of miles (which you dont) or cant afford the petrol or aren't really that into cars. Why would anyone want their car to sound like a tractor and finish revving at 4k when you can have a petrol?

As long as I can afford it I will be in a petrol.

What category do I fit into then?   My mileage has dropped since we moved offices to below 10K and I'm safe to say I'm very much a car enthusiast and I could afford the petrol if needed

FYI mine revs past 5K RPM  :smug:

To answer the OP's question.  I did consider an ED30 before buying my Audi TDI.  Having owned a diesel for over 4 years I couldn't bear the thought of having to fill up twice to travel the same distance on one tank of diesel.

Whilst I'd love the power and the potential of the ED30, for me in the mid range, a diesel has enough grunt to make short work of any over-taking manoeuvres, and with a remap you do have to pay attention as you might find yourself a little close to the bumper as you pull out....

In this day and age, with the amount of traffic and the state of our roads, diesel is just as quick across country as its petrol equivalent.  There are speed limits remember   Also, fuel prices are only going one way......

I only buy cars now when there is something really different and new.  So when the DSG gearbox came along I bought the GTI.  Now I am waiting for all electric drive with a ic motor to top up the power storage.  I would not dream of just swapping a good car for a newer version of the same.  But because the OP is forced to give back his car to the owners he is in this miserable position of considering some smog box.  Tell them to shove their lease and buy a good secondhand GTI, map it and keep it for years.

Not all of us can afford that Egbutt!  I get company car allowance, so my monthly lease hire payments are almost completely covered by my employer.  Lease hire is brilliant really, makes a nice car affordable for most and means you can get a new car every 3 or so yrs.  Suits me just fine!

an oil burner is about 5.5p a mile cheaper (on fuel)

on 8k miles pa this works out about £36 a month

having had both the big win is stoping for fuel less (range)

Get a diesel if mpg is important, maybe go the whole hog and get a bluemotion.
The VAG diesel engines are excellent they just don't have the same smile factor.

If you want to enjoy your driving then petrol all the way. If you want to be sensible then diesel it is.
