My guess is that if you are draining the engine when cold then you won't get out the coolant in the heater matrix and on the other side of the thermostat, which is why they only managed to drain 5 litres.

When I changed mine (plus expansion tank) I probably got out between 8 and 10 litres but I used the 'hot' method shown on YT with the engine up to temperature and the cabin heater on max.

I did mine after I had the heater matrix replaced but ended up with slightly orange coolant which I'm lead to believe is quite common if even a small amount of residual G13 mixes with G12 Evo but apparently doesn't compromise its effectiveness.

Seems strange the garage said they only got 5 litres out. I have checked again today (about 2 weeks after job was done) and coolant level is still correct.

Which generation of Golf do you have? Digital or analogue instrument display?

This might not be your issue but on later generation cars with an analogue instrument display, there’s a light sensor in the instrument display that detects poor, low level outside lighting conditions (e.g. if it’s cloudy and overcast, during - and when approaching - the hours of darkness, when entering a dimly lit tunnel or multi storey car park), the display automatically dims down, leaving just the needles illuminated. This is a prompt to switch your lights on so you can see and be seen. Once your lights are on, the dials on instrumentation display will illuminate. On cars where the rotary light switch has an ‘auto’ setting, leaving the lights set to ‘auto’ should eliminate the issue as the car automatically turns the lights on in poor lighting conditions.

I have exactly the same set up - RCD510 with dynaudio but where the phone button only mutes. I concluded (as you have) that I'm simply missing the necessary hardware. I bought a cheap Bluetooth adapter for the media in module under the armrest. Obviously it doesn't allow phonecalls, and you can't skip songs from the steering wheel - but it allows me to stream music to the headset with decent sound quality. An option if you don't want to mess with stuff too much.

Just fill it up, start the engine and let the stuff work through. The car will need to bleed all the air out, or you'll get a hydro lock.

When i did my water pump, i bought the bleed kit from amazon, with the correct header tank connection. Made it so much easier to see the bubbles as they worked out.

Took around 45 minutes to an hour to work all the air out.

Make sure you get the right coolant, which it seems like you have. I bought genuine VW. I got 8 litres i think, ready mixed from VW.

The symptoms you describe point to air still in the system. Either the bleed did not completely work or air is still getting in somehow. If a leak then the master cylinder level will slowly go down which presumably you are keeping a check of. The brake pedal does not directly connect to the master cylinder so not sure what the fluid is in the rubber boot. Vw manual says bleed sequence is passenger front, driver side front, passenger rear then driver rear.  Use dot4 low viscosity brake fluid. My first action would be to re bleed and then look at possible master cylinder issues. The lllparts website may be able to help identify the correct part number and give some idea of prices. You could be onto something with the SFD2. My car is box fresh being only a few weeks registered. It did do a load of updates once I got it connected. Let’s see if anyone else with a new 8.5 has had better luck than me!

That's great to hear, hope you continue to enjoy it for many more years. I have kept my Edition 35 almost standard. I have just replaced the multimedia system to something more in-keeping with today's needs and added a nicer OEM+ feel spoiler addon and rear defuser. Other than that, it's standard.

My car is 18 months old (late 2024 build) and hasn’t had any software updates. For some reason, OTA updates don’t seem to happen on the 8.5, while they are frequent on the mk8!

It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that newer builds than my car with newer software have locked out obd11 changes. Feels a bit unlikely. We need someone else with a fresh build, an Edition 50 perhaps, to try it and report back!
