Golf mk7 / Re: Lighter wheels = Rougher ride?

If you ask AI this in different ways you get opposing answers: sometimes it says it makes ride harsher, other times more comfortable. That's AI for you :)

I have made the change twice. Both to OZ (leggera and ultraleggera). Once on a 997, with the same tyres switched over, and the ride was better.

And on my Clubsport S and the ride is leagues better BUT on this one I went from 19 prets to 18 OZs saving 2kg a corner, and had new tyres so those two probably explain much of the improvement.

Have you changed the tyres too? There is a lot of sidewall stiffness variation between makes - even with same load rating.

Finally got Revo stage 1 and tcu tune, picked the absolute worst day to have this done , can’t really give the car some in this weather, the drive back from Northampton felt like the drive there to be honest, hopefully see a big difference when it’s dry 🤞🏻 the guys at Northampton motorsport was great.

Golf mk7 / Lighter wheels = Rougher ride?
« Last post by P6GTD on 14 November 2025, 13:14 »
I’ve replaced my (heavy) standard Parker’s with aftermarket alloys approx 2kg per wheel lighter. Same size 18” and width as the originals.

Much has been made of the virtues in reducing unsprung weight.

But the only discernible effect for me is a rougher ride on most surfaces.

My car has DCC and each of the settings seems to give a ride about 10% rougher than with the heavier wheels.

I’ve searched this and other forums before posting as there doesn’t seem to be any comment other than on AI which suggests a rougher ride may indeed be the result of a lighter wheel causing the suspension to react more eagerly (sensitively?).

Any opinions or experience?

Sadly it's a closed system so the gas should stay in there virtually indefinitely. 12 months would indicate a pretty slow leak.

When tracing mine, it would stop working after about 3 months. It still passed the vacuum test though. Mine was bad pressure sensor.

Mine has always come on when unlocking when it's getting dark but the CH feature has only ever worked by pulling the headlights before getting out (you set the length of time on in the Info menu) - this really annoyed me because I used to have it automatically in my Mk5 - the only advantage of doing this way is that I avoid all of the 'you've left your lights on' remarks when locking up in car parks.

That’s the way any recent VW’s I’ve owned have worked too. And yes, CH/LHalso worked automatically in the mk5 I owned many years ago.

@HonkyGonk; did you buy your car new or used? If the the latter, then maybe a previous owner changed the CH/LH functionality by changing the coding so it worked like earlier generation VW’s. I seem to remember reading many years ago that any bespoke coding changes an owner has made get over-written if there’s an official VW software update, so I suspect that maybe what’s happened with your CH/LH functionality.

@SRGTD; I bought it second hand so I guess there was no way to know whether it had any bespoke coding - if it did, this was the only thing was changed.

Do you think there's any validity to the door actuator fault being a cause?

Sorry, I’ve no idea if a faulty door actuator could be the cause.

There was indeed stepping of the rear tyres, particularly on drivers side. New boots fitted, alignment done and problem gone!

Of interest, does anyone know if vw approved have an age limit on tyres for their retail stock? My tyres were 7years and 2 months old…..

I think you’ll struggle to get any money out of them now. They’ll give you some generic bs about how their cars go through a million point check. Age won’t come into it, but they may have a minimum tread depth.

Stepping very common on these- over a period of time you’ll start to find the tyres noisy again

They have agreed to pay 50% of my costs for the tyres. I’m happy with that.

It could be natural seepage in that case. Try and use the AC more frequently to help lubricate the system. I wouldn’t be overly worried over a 12 month period
Thanks.
They guys at the garage, did say that the new gas (r1234yf) is really bad for general "leakage", much much worse than the older r123 gas.

I generally leave the AC on 247, maybe I've just used it up lol
