Just turn the auto handbrake off ;)

I bought my Mk7 in 2017 (when 3 years old), and have enjoyed 9 years of motoring except:

Used coolant, VW replaced coolant bottle and I think water pump under warranty after 6 months of ownership, been fine last 8.5 years.
My Drivers mirror glass also fell off on motorway
Alternator went at 60,000
First set of new discs and pads at 50,000
1 x new Battery
Heater matrix blocked, very common on many VW/Audi/Seat, new one installed, car now burning hot!
Drivers door electric window switch broke, replaced myself with OEM
No gearbox problems as auto
Normal Alloy white worm, wheels refurbed
Infotainment was crap, paid to have later VW OEM CarPlay headunit installed, its great

I think that is everything, all in all, I am very impressed with it, and will be keeping it for as long as I can, as it is now being talked about as peak car, ie. no lane assist or other boll0cks no one wants!

Sounds like you have been unlucky, but obviously all second car cars have issues. I wouldn’t touch a 8, better off with a 7.5 IMHO

Thanks for that, appreciated.

I've always had manuals but wondering if DSG would avoid the jerky auto handbrake release I had on my mk7 manual. Might seem like a small issue I found it really annoying. And as you said the notchy 2nd gear wouldn't be an issue.

Hi all,

Been reading through this thread and wanted to confirm with others who in the UK has been charged extra for the sports tyres? I ordered in Belfast but UK car and added the performance pack at £3675 - but also been charged an extra £880 for the tyres. I have queried this with my dealer so waiting on a response but noticed others stating these are included as part of the pack? It's a bit of a sticking point with me as I have no use for the sports tyres when daily driving so don't want to pay extra when I'm already paying for the performance pack. Also I got no discount at all and was told the £1000 contribution was only for existing VWFS customers. Was even debating switching my order to an R Black Edition as the discount on them at the minute is crazy - but really want the Edition 50 - just feel as though the order process has been a bit of a mess.

Thanks!

Golf mk8 / Re: mk8.5 GTI road noise
« Last post by chrisgolf1 on 10 March 2026, 09:34 »
I've tried sound deadening / proofing in other cars without much success. Seems to be a 'dark art' involving either dampening panels more with 'dynamat' - although VW will have already damped them - or adding a barrier between you and the noise, which doesn't seem to work well with low frequency road noise (although other manufacturers seem to manage it better than VW).

The main problem to my mind is that it's hard to get a car these days with small enough wheels to not make much noise. The most bog-standard family saloon comes with low profile tyres and 18/19 inch wheels. A Triumph Dolomite Sprint I had 40 years ago had 13 inch wheels, although cornering wasn't necessarily its strongpoint...

Bear in mind that the noise levels quoted by tyre manufacturers relates to the noise levels outside the car,  not in the cabin. However, if VW are fitting less - or poorer quality - sound deadening material in their cars in an effort to save a few £££’s IMHO it’s reasonable to assume more road noise would be transmitted into the cabin by tyres with a high dBA rating than those with a low dBA rating.

There are various sound car deadening kits and materials that can be bought for DIY installation. I have no personal experience of these products but installed in the most noise prone areas of the car (e.g. boot floor, spare wheel well, doors) they should improve things.

Could be worth getting the alignment checking too, could the noise be the rears saw toothing?

Hi, I've had that on a previous car, but this one's only done 1200 miles, so probably not the case. cheers.
