Golf mk8 / Re: Newer mk8 cs vs older mk8 cs

The (computer) hardware and associated digital controller units all over the car were changed throughout the Mk8 run.

You have to remember these cars are all digital in pretty much every aspect.

The software can be changed but some problems were hardware that couldn't necessarily be fixed without hardware replacement that vw never will pay for.

This has been the whole debacle vw customers have been facing for six years.

Personally I'd pick one from 2023 if you want to stand a decent chance of avoiding crap.

The OSF you mention is usually called the 5F controller. It's the "brains" of the infotainment system, a computer that lives behind the glove box.

Not seen anyone say it's causing HK problems, it has been known to be the cause of the various bongs and crashes on the Mk8 though.

It's an expensive part, £3500...unless there is a TSB for it they aren't going to even think about touching it. In fact the dealer isn't allowed to do any warranty work without the VW computer authorising them... No guess work or initiative allowed.

Today I when to my local dealer to enquiry about placing an order, but largely I was there to see if I can charm them into giving me a discount for my 10+ years of doing business with them.

We had a long conversation and I tried to gather information they may have at a dealer level. He told me there have been allocated 8 slots, so 30+ in total as they have a few dealerships. They have sold 1 slot thus far. Only 8 slots will be available for the year, and customers are free to order from factory in whichever spec, but not alcantara wheel. I asked repeatedly, in different ways, surely they will receive more slots down the line, either in the next quarter, when press cars come to the UK or perhaps when they sell all their slots. However, based on what he’s been told by the bosses so far, it’s only 8, with the future being unknown.

Absolutely, not a penny off the list price. On paper, it’s a Golf GTI TRC level time-bound production, i.e., free to order all year round, but at the prices of a limited production Clubsport S. It would have been much better if VW UK made up their mind instead of pussyfooting around and said its 50k with X limited production take it at full price or leave it, no discounts.

Can anyone who has ordered these types of special edition cars before shed some light on their experiences and if this is just the dealer selling strategy? I find it hard to believe dealers across the UK have only been given a limited number of slots of the whole year whilst all the PR press says it will be available for order for the whole 2026.

Current delivery lead time is 3/4 months.

On the off topic, he mention that the Golf R with the 2.5 RS3 engine is in late prototype cycle now, which confirms Autocar’s report earlier this year.

I bought a mk4 r32 new, each dealer was given 7 slots per year for 2 years and they were all allocated. I randomly called one day and they'd been given an extra 2 allocations so I snapped one up. No discount and as none were in the country at that point no test drive either, similar to this.

Thanks Joe, that's really useful to know. So one one hand I could get a 2021 CS, take it in and get a full update then essentially from a software point of view it's the same as a 2023 CS (an updated one) and therefore less buggy. On the other hand clocks would be different still.

Does anyone know if it's as simple as it has GTI stitched into the seats and therefore a 'newer 8 CS' or a little more tricky to work out?

Cars and parts for sale / Re: VW Golf GTi Performance 2019

Thanks again Dave. It does make you realise there is little value in maintaining a full dealer service history. I was always of the view it would be more desirable and would help values but it appears that view is somewhat blinkered.
I don’t think anyone necessarily values the maintenance of one car against another, from the enquiries I had last year it was people trying to chip away the price.

I always take a view,  well it’s had £x spent and the common items replaced so I won’t have to worry.

My dealer said it’s performance rated. So the more cars the dealer sells generally, the more edition 50 slots they get. Tbh I don’t think they will offer discounts further down the line as they seem to be very sure on the no discount and we aren’t really bothered if we sell loads approach. This is significantly different to any other experience I’ve had buying edition or even regular models. What they sell, they sell.

My concern is that they will say no discount for a while until they can't shift any more cars. Then they may be forced to offer discount if they wish to sell more. If I pay full RRP and they later offer 15% discounts, I would be quite annoyed.

I don't mind the price of the car as such, everything is exorbitant these days, but only if the deal is fair and transparent. Right now, I can't get a clear answer. PR says available all year round, but local dealers say they are only given a set allocation.

No dealer I’ve spoken to is prepared to give anything off. Mine at least gave me more than motorway for the 45. Their stance seems to be that they have these build slots and if they’re not filled, then so be it. Let’s face it, the GTI Isn’t a massive earner for VW. The money is in all the regular fodder, not in special editions.

I’ve had a 35 and 45 and never ever paid list price or anywhere near. This feels so different.
