Ok so I got the lates copy of Golf+ dropped though the dor by the postie the other day and whilst reading the new products section came accross an article about a Rotrex charger suitable for the mk2 1.8 8v digifant , apparently (and I have checked wit Rotrex) you can get bhp figures of apprx 180ish bhp on stock internals and digfant managment.
Now I'm planning to pull my 5 door MK2 off the road at the end of next summer for a complete strip down , bare metal respray and rebuild and had been planning on a VR6 transplant or abf but I'm now thinking rebuild my 8valve engine and supercharge it, plus points are I don't have to change engine numbers with the DVLA or anything like that and I bet it sounds very very nice. of course bigger brakes will be a must. Thi kit costs about £1600 which I didn't think was too bad all things considered ..
Thoughts :smug: and Ideas please

Why not drop a 20v turbo in, 180 or 225 as standard and could cost you less than supercharging yours.
-
Sound good, but you could buy a vr6 for around 400 and turbo it for under 600! Then you would have around 250bhp to play with.
-
Keeping the original 1.8 and supercharging it In my opinion would keep the car closer to it's roots and still an original mk2 not some hybrid car , I also think that 180 would be more than enough to make it a very very fast car by any standard without adding the extra 50kilos over the front that a VR6 would bring (changing the beautiful handling)
-
180bhp on stock rods/pistons? BANG. If it was safe and reliable to run that much boost do you really think VW would have gone to such lengths to strengthen the G60 engine? Do it properly, do it once, or don't do it at all in my book.
-
theres a lot more cost effective ways to get power than that tbh
-
sounds interesting but no way can the digi handle 180bhp on standards. Rotrex talk bollox with figures.
-
Where's the link to this £1600 kit then?
I'm not seeing how the standard Digifant would manage it. Forced induction has rather different requirements for injection systems than naturally aspirated.
Technically if you lowered the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket, the engine might well be OK running boost, but that would mean head off and a lot more action than just 'bolting on' a supercharger.

20vt for £1600?!?! Where can I get one of those!

Ive seen complete 20Vt's for that much. Picked up one with full cream leather the other month for £500.

Full BAM 225 engines go for anywhere £900 to £1400 with every thing you need

The G60 engine was produced for motorsport IIRC, it was uprated to deal with way over 200 bhp and to compete in highly competitive environments. Also VW have a habit of over engineering engine components. Not saying that a standard 8v engine would def cope with low pressure boost, but I would not be surprised.
-
could just be boring and keep the head port and polish it and just stick it on a 2.0 bottom end in and good for 150.
2.0 are pretty cheap
-
a 225 20vt will cost 3-5 grand by the time it's fitted there is a lot more than just buying the engine.
digifant 2 and boost is a bad idea it'd be like presenting matches to a retard in a firework factory
-
IIRC
YDRC  it was a production engine, the motorsport ones you're thinking of were far more modified and produced in the region of 300bhp.. with 'chargers needing to be replaced after pretty much every stage.
-
with 'chargers needing to be replaced after pretty much every Tescos trip.
Edited for road spec g60.

it was a chap on the ed38 website that i think works for storm developments. to good results i believe on std management.

digi 1 would do it happily it looks the same just a lot better
-
You can knock about 20bhp off that final flywheel figure, transmission losses don't increase like that when you hike the engine power.. another case of dodgydynoitis.
-
In reality there kit proberly has a blow off valve so you would get less than 0.5% Boost becuase trust me here the compression on a standard 8V is too high and conrods will smash through that little ol head of yours! don't expect that stock engine to last if you boost it!
Weight to power always has alot to do with handing and the way a car feels.
I would prefer handling over all out power which you loose anyways through smoke and tyres!
-
Even if the stock lump could handle a little boost, the 020 gearbox sure as hell wouldn't last long with the hike in power. I've killed two on ~110bhp ! lol.
Some of you will have seen this pic before !

You say that bud but I have thrashed 3 MKII 8v's and never killed a box. I even thrashed one for 45 miles with no gearbox oil in and it still worked!
I think you have voodooo gearbox breaking powers!

Maybe, as I have also killed one on a Mk3!
or....maybe the next owner of your cars had the joys of killing the box once and for all ?
-
No it's still in the car and competing in the GTI challenge. It was the white one!
