How easy is it to change from drum breaks to disc on a mk2 gti as my axle is bent and cant seem to find one near me and have been offered one with drums can anyone help or if anyone has a gti rear beam near colchester pm me many thanks

You will need handbrake cables and to repipe the solid lines to get rid of the compensator
Tbh its a bit of a downstep going to a non gti rear axle as you will lose the rear anti roll bar
-
Not all GTi's had discs on the rear iirc, so it could be an early GTi rear beam, while it's not attached to anything surely he could have an ARB fitted/welded on.

i forgot to mention i also have a mk3 gti rear beam but it is 5 stud
-
phone vw and see if they list more than one part number and if they only have one part number evrything should swap over

Meh, mine's about as early as it gets and it has rear discs. They weren't an option either so i'm not convinced about the "not all gti's have rear discs" that i've read aswell tbh.

the compensator is fine to leave in, 1.8 carb models with the 9" servo had them. Pretty much a bolt on swap, you could convert it to discs even by swapping over the stub axles etc.
Are you sure its the actual beam thats bent and not one of the stub axles though?
The 5 stud GTI beam will swap straight on too, just fit 4 stud discs :)

[/quote] im not sure as the rear wheel sits out at the top it has hit a curb not sure how fast it was going as it was done by last owner how would i be able to tell if its the axle or sub axle ?

All gtis have discs on the back from launch, i have the sales brochures to prove it
You are thinking of mk1 gtis, they all had drums on the back

if you took the wheel of and did some measurements then repeat for the other side, i recon you should be able to spot if its stubby or beam? Could always whip the stub off the mk3 axle & swap over, if the carrier bolts dont round out the job shouldnt take too long?
-
how easy are they to take off and change ? also if i took the one off the car would i be able to see if its bent just by looking
-
biggest headache is the caliper carrier bolts, if they come out ok then its relatively straightforward. Disc off, dust plute off, some bolts and off comes the stubby! I'd take one off the 5 stud beam and hold it up next to the one on the car, should be obvious if yours is bent :)

i dont ave another one to check it with so how could i tell

I thought you had a 5 stud GTI beam? Nick one off that, or is the beam bare?
-
i dont have 5 stud beam ive have been offered one thats all by bloke in colchester so have nothing to compare it to
-
ah i see! if you have the rear wheels off and compare the angle of the disc to the beam i recon you should be able to spot if the beam or the stub is bent :)
