wehey! another carb problem
normal road driving - OK
as soon as i get on the m'way, car stutters and misfires like mad and has no power. As soon as i pull the choke up though, its fine. Im thinking its running too lean but solutions welcme please.
-
could be carb icing, does it happen instantly or does it get worse the further you go

further i go the worse it gets. only happens when im at around 50 - 70 mph. if i bury my foot down and fly down the motorway then its ok. could be carb icing, but ive gone back to the standard air intake set up, with the elephant trunk into the wing and everything.
-
does that include the pipe and shroud on the exhaust manifold, and have you checked the warm air flap is actually opening when the engine is running :)

hot air feed is on, and iv eput the flap so its always hot, iva jammed it on hot position.
-
If you have jammed it on the hot only setting, then there is no point having the hosing to the wing! Take that away, as i suppose you could be cooling down the hot air too much, and causing the problem again. Also, check for sure that the hot air pipe is attached properly to the air box, might not be a good fit?

hot air feed is well attached. I'l try blockin goff the cold intake with some cling film or foil.

Change your fuel filter. It could be clogged causing fuel starvation.
-
right...been having a play with the carb, and its done not much joy. little bit better though, if i stop, put it in first, and set of normally, the car kangaroos kind of, and then picks up and goes, but if i set of slowly then its ok. its wierd.
-
It sounds as if you are getting a lean cut. Run the engine up to temp, then get hold of the carb and gently rock it back and forth. (If these carbs are the same as the older Audi 80 carbs, it will have a rubber sandwhich plate at the bottom of it and these split.) If the revs go up and down with the rocking, then this rubber plate is split.
Check the float level as well.

the carb is abit loose on the manifold so i will have a look and tighten it, the rubber flange thing i onyl a year old, along with the carb, so i doubt they will be old or broken. How do i check float level?
-
One thing at a time. Tighten down the carb first, but you may well need a new gasket. That will probably cure the problem. Then try the car.
As for the float, look in the haynes for info about that. TBH, it should not need touching unless someone has buggered about with it before.
-
have a look at the bolts holding the inlet on, the ones on my mates gti were barely fingertight when ywe pulled out the engine!
-
stay off the motorway

haha yer i think thats the solution. although i had it again today on normal roads.
Right, had it again, pulled over, opened the bonnet, had a play with the carb, and noticed the sandwich plate bewteen carb and manifold has a crack, so my money is on that, so i'l order another one today and see if that sorts it out.
-
need quick reply-
where can i get a new gasket to replace the broken one? do fast road cars sell it? or GSF or ECP?

is that one for the weber? cos i had a look at mine and it has 4 screws holding it down.
-
is it the one under the webber or the one on the actual manifold?

not sure. its the rubber sandwich bit.

ok that piece may be webber only then? try these guys:

right. Still havent found a carb mounting flange, but i had a good look toda, and i cant really tell if its cracked, or its just the way it was moulded (injecton moulded style, were you can see the line where the two moulds join)
I did mention to diamond hell a while ago my fuel pump is leaking, he said replace it, which i havent done so yet, but i will make a trip to GSF either tomorrow or tuesday and change it. Do you think that fuel pump could be the culprit?
Today i had to drive 300 miles and about 200 of them was with the problem, was a right pain. When i pull the choke up, it helps, but problem still there, just not as bad. So it means that when there's less air coming in, it seems to go better, which leads me to believe its maybe the pump, when theres alot of air the pump cant get enough petrol to the carb so it missfires/jumps. thats my theory anyway. will replace the pump this week and see how it goes. This problem is reaaaaaly getting on my t!ts now, before where i used to jump in the car and enjoy the drive, now its a game of tension and hopeing it wotn cut out at the next junction or while on the move
-
aye possibly! is the fuel reservoir still there or was that removed when the webbr was fitted?

fuel reservoir still there. Pump is leaking quite abit now, wel tmorrow i'l buy a new pump, and fit it. i need this problem fixed asap, as i need to do alot of miles this week and weekend so will need the car in tip top condition.

oh you reckon, the old MkIIs a tempremental thing, it will know you have just bought a MK3 BarGti it will give you nothing but hassle from now til January

haha thats my worst fear. it was actually a coincidence, cos the problem started around the time where i decided to look for another car, so yeah , i do think my mk2 is doing it on purpose.
-
turn up the boost! i mean the mixture screw
-
change the fuel resovor and clean the jets and bottom of the float chamber
-
change the fuel resovor and clean the jets and bottom of the float chamber
how would changing the fuel reservoir help?
Ive arranged to go up to diamond hell's workshop sometime in the next few weeks and get it running sweet. hopefully gonna replace fuel pump today and that should sort out the problem.
-
fuel resovor (pressure reg) can corrode and collect sh!t on the inside, there are 2 ways it can piss the carb off,
a) if it's knackerd it dosen't supply adiquate pressure to the carb
b) they can corrode on the inside and collect crap as well then pass this into the carb whitch causes merrry hell. it is highly optimal to fit a new resovor and a filter between the carb and resovor / pressure reg. my old syncro used to suffer with this problem till changed it
-
Right. Got a new fuel pump, and not sorted the problem
So i had an extremly close look, and infact, the carb mounting flange has a split in it, so that HAS to be the problem.
I NEED the car this week especially as my grandparents are here from spain and they want me to drive them to places ect and need to drive another 300 miles on monday to take them to the airport.
So does anyone please know where i can get a weber 32/34 DMTL carb mounting flange? not the gasket or anything, the thick rubber mount that goes in between the carb and inlet manifold. does GSF or ECP sell this? as i need it ASAP, but if you know of a website that sells it and postage is pretty quick please let me know. This is URGENT!!!

Ghetto Stylie it with electrical tape for now to seal the crack.
Install Skype on your PC and call Webcon (assuming you have a set of speakers and mic) to see if they have any.

ahh ok. i'l call them with skype tomorrow. Bit late now lol
i think the one he posted from avs car parts earlier in the thread fits a weber. Will also give them a call tomorrow and hopefully put an order in either one of the companies. electrical tape tip is good jay, will try and do my best tomorrow morning. cheers.
-
Let us know how you get on with the electrical tape, i think it should seal it just enough, even if you only use it to diagnose the problem even further. If the rubber sandwich plate thingy is expensive I'd also look at using a silicon based sealant/glue stuff, I know someone who used it on his flying saucer on his digi
-
yeah i did think of getting silicon gun out and sealing it, but was also scared maybe it got sucked into the carb and then into the engine and making a big mess. AVS car parts wants £30 including postage for the rubber sandwhich.

just thinking. Can i try it? or would you not recommend it? Put a tad on my finger and do my best to seal it, or would it definitly get sucked in? dont think it would as the crack is fairly small, but always best to ask.

I think mine's in a huff because I've bought a jetta to keep me on the road after it's sold :( Keeps throwing a tantrum!
-
oh yeah do, but i bought another mk2 - if i drive one, the other then breaks down next time if comes out

nope - i am showing one the for sale sign
-
jsut called AVS and they said the rubber flange is original vw, so when buying a weber, it comes with a 10mm aluminium spacer that bolts to the original pierburg rubber flange. So the bit you posted jon, was the correct bit.
£30 delivered. Cheers guys, will let you know how i get on. In the meantime im gonna put some electrical tape around the crack and see how it goes, as ive had to miss school today cos i got to the top of the high street and car started spluttering big time, so i had to turn around and limp back to my house. Will let you know how i get on.

You'd expect your wife's 1.3 carby to give you grief in the cold of the Netherlands wouldn't ya?
-
Hate carbs. Mines doing 14mpg at the moment :( Going to get it setup at a place that rolling road it, tune it, then re-rolling road it and hopefully see an improvement in performance and mainly mpg!
-
FIXED!!!!!!! well, it was the rubber flange. Old one was cracked and the inside was perished, also, one of the 4 screws that hold it in place, was missing!!! the numpty that fitted the carb previously must of lost one and said aahhhh feck it, 3 will do. So it was both the missing screw and the flange that caused the problem. car feels so much better now, and it doesnt backfire like a machine gun now. well chuffed
-
nawt wrong with a bit of machine gun action, especially when driving around Soweto  Watch them f**k*rs duck 'n dive!

my car actually made the backfiring sequence of an F1 (i know it doesnt rev to 19k rpm and i know it cant be heard miles and miles away, but it made that fast backfiring burble, it wasnt huge pops, it was like a long sequence of small pops.
listen to this video (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&safe=off&q=quality%20hotel%20bournemouth&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl) at 0:32 seconds. when he upshifts, that machine gunning sound, thats what mine made. sounded glorious.

Well done, glad you managed to sort it out. Process of illimination always the way.
