Title: Loan Car
Post by: BodyThief on 22 October 2008, 22:08
I've been driving a Polo 1.4SE Auto for a week now and although I woulnd't swap it for my Gti   I like it for the following reasons:

1. Stereo is much better than Gti
2. I prefer the black interior to grey of the Gti
3. Ride quality is amazing (without having too much more body roll)
4. Auto box, while sapping the power, isn't as slushy as my previous BMW330i

Don't like the flat seats, boxy looks + huge gap in wheel arches & obvious power difference.

Not bad though, I thought I'd hate it  :nerd:

I know what you mean the GF has a new 1.4 Match auto so you get slightly better seats and a GTI style steering wheel

Not sure on the Stereo front though but the Match only gets front speakers so doesn't sound great

....

I had a Lupo loaner for a week and really liked it. A modded Lupo GTI would be the best small VeeDub.

I know what you mean as well .... I've had one as a loan car whilst the Golf was having a bit of warranty work done .... Polo's are very easy to drive indeed and chuck about

The autos are seriously slow though - and I think, as someone who had a 330i auto - any comparison with the superb auto box on BMW means you must be having a laugh .....

I drive auto BMW's every day and have always been impressed at how good - for an auto - they are .... not that I  would swap my Golf for one !

If I had to have a small low power car I would look at them .... as I say they are seriously easy to drive - far nicer IMO than a base Golf.

....

But I don't think that the Polo is a proper small car - It's still too big. I don't like them because they are neither one thing nor the other - Neither Lupo (truly small) nor Golf (small medium) sized.

The size statement is true Robin, if you parked the my MK2 next to the GF's Polo you see how big modern small cars have become over the years.

But with the only other (new) small VW choice being the Fox then I know which Id choose (or bring back the Lupo GTI )

The Polo is a nice size, almost as much room as a Golf, just a smaller boot. It feels more nimble.

I think a 1.6 version with DSG, sports seats and just slightly firmer suspension would be great. Maybe I should buy a Polo Gti !

One thing I don't like though is even with the seat at it's lower setting, it still feels like you are perched up high.

It will be interesting to drive my Gti again after a week in this, maybe I will hate i!

I had a Lupo GTI in the fastest colour (silver  ) Had a catback and induction kit on it and it was a little screamer. Under 1000kg and over 125bhp made for a good little buzz box

I've got a Polo 1.4 while my Ed30 is in for warranty work.  It def des handle pretty well given what it is, but the auto/dsg box is awful when mated to that engine.

Hammering along the C road from Cartmel to the A590 (Egg Pudding Lane) I apexed one RH corner to find a hedge cutter astride both lanes (narrow).  The brake assist, traction control and abs all came on and the GTI avoided the numpty (I know him well).  I don't like the steering on the GTI but when the chips are down it works really well.

If I'd hit him I would most likely survive in a Golf.  Not sure about a Lupo.

....But that's the kind of thinking that mums justify for their huge SUV's.

Been out for a while, its like someone has got a MK5 GTI and shrunk it lol

If memory servers its a 1.8T 180bhp. Quite a funky little car but expensive for what it is.

Yeah they were a limited edition and I think they only did them for the LHD market! Shame as I think a nice grey or black one would look mint!

Yeah, there are quite a few of these new Polo GTIs at the Brands Hatch meet, some of them look really smart. When it was dark I actually confused one with a MK5 Golf GTI

I know what you mean at a quick glance I have made that same mistake, I must admit I considered one before buying the Golf, I decided against it as I wasnt overly impressed with the 1.8T engine...far to thirsty!

The Polo I had as a loan car a couple of weeks ago had a stubborn cd player. When you pressed skip it took like 5 seconds before it actually stopped playing the current track to skip.

I think nearly all "small" cars have got larger as the years progress.  Look at the latest Fiestas, Corsas, Clios and the likes, and compare them to their 1970/80s namesakes.

As if...all my local dealers persist to give us 1.2 Polo's or 1.6 Golf Plus'

Looks like a nice motor, always favoured them over the rivals..Peugeot, Renault etc.

Yes, but the "SUV" arguments are flawed.  Yes, they may be bigger, and have more "metal" around you, but they generally weigh much more - thus taking much longer to stop, and because they are top heavy (a higher centre of gravity), they have a serious tendency to roll over, and crush the occupants.

The only time "bigger is better" in crashes is in "normal" cars - so a Lupo against an Audi A8 won't stand a chance.

Yeah I had a little Polo the other week. Nice little car, very responsive electric steering but not enough feel really (not that I was expecting much tbh!)

Went quite well for a little 1.2.

Got a Fiesta courtesy car the other week whilst my other car was in for a service, and I must admit - it is a far superior car to the Polo.

Ford have some very good engineers.  Their cars are all good to drive.  But the image in the UK makes it hard to buy one.
(My leave and forget Ford Ka in The IOM (no MOT) is actually a really fun drive, great steering and handling, but rubbish quality and image)

I rate Fords current range highly too Nosher, well I do work for them (well used to since the Indians bought us out)
I can change gear in a Ka without using the clutch, smoother than with using it!! try it next time you drive it.

If you look on YouTube (tt 2008 ford ka) you can see a very long video of my Ka driving around the 37 mile TT course.  It's electronic ignition unit was broken and it would only do about 15 mph uphill.  I was on a crosser following.

Must try the clutchless shift.  Better than a DSG.
