I don't.

Leaving the MK5 (must be DSG) as the best of the bunch.
Just because I own (and like) a MK5 I don't have to like the earlier versions.
What do other MK5ers think.

Never liked the MK1 Golf GTi but I did like the Ford Escort RS Turbo
Never liked the MK2 Golf GTi but I did like the Ford Escort RS Turbo and Astra GTE 16v
Never really bothered with the MK3 Golf GTi, but I did not dislike it, but I did like the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, Lancia Delta Integrale and their rival, the Impreza.
I did like the MK4 Golf GTi and still do, provided they are tasteful and OEM +
I do like the MK5 Golf GTi.

I have a Mk5 and would love a mk1 GTI

Love the MK1
Love the MK2
Love the MK5
I love how the title of this thread has been very carefully worded to include "MK5" .......I wonder if we continue to do this, if we can get away with no threads moving .....

First car was a mk4 1.8T, loved that car. Even though in many ways the mk5 is better I still miss that car.
A neighbour of mine had a 16v mk2 back in the day and thats what got me interested in cars. Would love to have a mk1 project when I get a house with a garage.
Always give a mk1 driver a nod if I pass one on the road - tis only respectful.
-
I have a Mk5 and would love a mk1 GTI
I have a Mk5 and I have a Mk1 GTI
Also in the past 3 1/2 years I've had the pleasure of owning 4-5 Mk1 GTIs, 15+ Mk2 GTI's, 3-4 Mk3 GTI/VR6's, 1 Mk4 GTI and 4 Mk5 GTI/R32/Ed30's... loved them all.. not equally of course

It rusted away in 1982, RIP
But MUCH better than the Volkswagen while it lasted.

my other chariot is a Mk1 KR 16v in Helios Blue - first car I owned - I still have it !
-
we have had the mk2 16v long before the mk5 also love the mk1 but not keen on the 3 and 4.
-
Mk I and Mk 2
Mk 3 and Mk 4 too bland and fat
Mk V best of all - will have to reserve judgement on the Mk VI until I see it, but I'm not overly impressed with the look of new Scirroco. Don't plan to change the Mk V though

Have to agree with that... I'd choose a decent Mk2 16v anyday over my Ed30 for a country blast... superb cars

the rallye never really did it for me looks wise... (sorry). The g60 could work out costly... a nice mk1 would be right up my street i think. But did take a few MK2's for a test drive as I needed a stop gap whilst waiting for the R to be delivered. Only problem was.. all the ones i saw were restoration attempts by the chav crew :embarassed:
Didnt take the plunge in the end..
-
Lets not forget the 8v MK2 chaps! Mines a belter and goes like the proverbial exiting a shovel at a fast rate of knots!
-
Love all the GTi's even the Mk3 and Mk4 ones !!!
my first GTi was a chavved up, raped mk2 8v Gti lasted all of 2 months but i got the GTi bug !
It was the Mk2 golf that got me into golfs, my cousin had a minter of a 1.8 gL ! it was sick !! ps cousins Golf is only on 48,000, its a H reg !!!! LOL
I absolutly love a stock mk1, especially with the twin round lights, and the mk2 16v in oak green !

....I've done 55,000 since August 05 - I really don't understand loving a car but not driving it much. Last week I did about 800 miles and this week looks like only 20 - I'm beginning to feel withdrawal symptoms.
I love and wave acknowledgement at all Mk GTI's/Ed30's and R32's.

....Have just started today to discuss with VWR what we'll do with the suspension (early KoniFSD's deteriorating) but she won't go into their workshop for quite a few weeks yet.
Last week I visited Milltek in Derby (400 miles) and took my daughter to see a college in Cornwall and went to Castle Combe at the weekend. This week I've only got the daily school run of 5 miles a day and she didn't need a lift today. Next week I'm visiting JKM in Portsmouth, Cardiff Uni, and friends in Surrey - It's just the way it goes and I never know beyond a week ahead.
That's part of the beauty of a Mk5 - Every journey is a joy and stress free :afro:

agreed, judging by the success and quality of the MK5 I think the MK6 will not let us down
probably exactly what people said after the mk2, and look what immediately followed it.

Got to say I like all the Golfs apart from the MK3. Had a MK4 and then a sudden turn in fortune at work allowed me to live in the dream world of MK5. A lot of people slate the MK4 but get a 1.8T with a map and its a cracking little car.

Shouldn't be too long until its finished - hopefully by xmas - keep some miles off the ED30.

where is it?
-
I've had a modded Mk2 16V big bumper and loved it. Always remember the day I sold it, when it drove off I realised how cool it looked and thought "why did I just sell that car?!!"
Also then had a mildly modded Mk4 1.8T, a very well built car but not very stimulating
Then a Mk5 R32 which blew me away, such a nice car. Sold that to get a Mk2 TT.
Now back on a Mk4 1.8T whislt I wait for the bank balance to recover after moving to a new house.
In the spring a MK5 will be mine!

I wanted to see his MK1 so I fixed the links.
Looking very smart Gareth

Absolutely stunning Gareth!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I could eat my diner off that
-
Steve thanks for fixing the links, dunno what I did wrong, thanks for your kind comments also. It was my late grandmothers car which she promised to me, whilst well ... difficult .. never mind. Anyway, I could never ever ever ever part with that car. I first had ownership of it it in 1996 so it's been with me for the last 11 years. I initially swapped it over to 16v in 2000, the bottom end gave up during an overly quick change from 4th to 5th at full throttle ... hmmm ... that was the end of that. I then bought a 1H Rallye engine, totally tripped and rebuilt it to a very excessive spec for example sputter bottom end bearings (the big ends were £106 alone), and a properly done head which I flowed on a supeflow flow bench (ruined 2 standard 1.8v heads until I found where the limits were for the 8v head) and got a very keenly flowing g60 head, hybrid T3/4 turbo, grey cosworth injectors, DTA etc etc. Our engine simulation programme (Ricardo Wave) predicted 280bhp with safe 28psi - the rebuld cost me £2k and all work carried out by myself. Got poor ... sold it for £500  on ebay ... the dumb ass who bought it fcuked me around and couldn't get it to run - complaining of overfueling - didn't have the heart to tell him he didn't know what he had. Anyway, bought a 1.8t AEB - for reasonable money - sold it recently at a loss again on ebay after no intrest in the forum. Then thankfully bought the ED30 , just waiting to get my hands on that properly, proper turbo going shortly on that.
.... then the missus told me ... when are you going to get your mk1 finished and I though fcuk it, I'll put another 16v back in it so ... there it is .... the engines a bit trick in so far as it's got a KR exhaust cam as inlet, is an 027 "3" prefixed head, got Dellorto 45's to go on after its run in and a quaife ATB all running through Avo coilovers and a full polybush set with seam welded rear beam and wishbones. Just need to get ED30 seat centre cloth for the seats front and rear and I'll be happy. Should be good - just hope its not to stiff and to extreme for the road ... and also that it makes me drive the ED30 less - HAVE TO GET REVO QUICK !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all the kind comments,

^^^ No probs :afro:
Thats some serious modifying you have been up to  and sounds like it's going to be an awesome car when finished
-
Amazing!!!!!!! Gareth - you should do a project thread for it in the MK1 project section! Im sure many others will be very interested in reading all of the things that you have done! Although, I appreciate that it will probably take you two weeks to write it all up considering the amount that you've done to it!
Great example of one of the best cars ever made! Never ever ever sell her!
-
That car must be bloody quick running on redbull!

Owned a 76 Bay camper, 1990 MK2 GTI, 1996 Polo, 98 Golf GT TDI, x2 2000 Golf GTI Turbos, 07 GTI(current) and 08 Polo Match(wifes).
I have to say my favourite was my 1990 black 3 door 8V big bumper GTI. Had her for 5 years and regretted the day I sold her. I even offered to buy it back a year later. I really want another, but family and safety dictate my current MK5 GTI. This is a great car and as much fun as my MK2, but just lacks a bit of character and soul.

Awesome looking MK1 you have there mate. Good fun!

....If you were to do one or two performance mods, you might unearth the Mk5's character and soul. But it's a slippery slope!!

god I'm feeling the love in here now  .

Nope < to the original question.
Im always drawn to modern cars hence buying a MK5. I like to have the new models, probably go after a special edition mk6 when they are released providing I like it.

DAMN... Thats just too painful to look at.. brings back memories of my first Mk2 16v I bought in 2005. It was a mint Tornado Red 3-door 16v with just 53k on the clock, smelt like new and really did drive just as good as the Mk5 GTI demo car I tried in Jan 2006. Wish I hadn't sold it now but I was too fussy for my own good and decided to sell it as the paintwork wasn't original everywhere

Nice pics. Looked like a good day!
-
cousins Golf is only on 48,000, its a H reg !!!! LOL
....I've done 55,000 since August 05 - I really don't understand loving a car but not driving it much. Last week I did about 800 miles and this week looks like only 20 - I'm beginning to feel withdrawal symptoms.
I love and wave acknowledgement at all Mk GTI's/Ed30's and R32's.
I only acknowledge E30s, and look at Mk5 GTIs.
I do not have the hots for older MKs, so of course a nice Mk2 is a nice Mk2, and Mk4 R32 looks better than Mk5 R32.

Anyone else notice Crabsters wind up attempt didnt work

It's a bit like freaky eaters on TV.
To only buy and drive fwd VW Golfs is like sticking to a diet of cheese.
Try a bacon buttie, a RWD BMW, for a change.
-
....
Been there and done that! My last car was a RWD straight-six BMW. But I didn't buy the GTI because it's FWD.

Nosh i have 3 cars, other than a golf and a Gti is something special, you will find most Ferrari /Porsche Gt2/3 owners will run a "cheese" golf GTi/R32/Tdi !!
the Mk1 was the first Hot Hatch ( well other than the Sunbeam ) and the Mk2 was a legend !!!

Had 2 Mk1 GTIS, one was rubbish and the other was great, loved it.
Looking for a clean Mk2 16v small bumper now.
Detest the Mk3 in every guise.
Had a Mk4 GTI 20vt, wasn't as bad a car as the press made out, kept it for 3 years and bought a
MK5 GTI, which was nice but didn't float my boat, changed for a MK5 R32, which I miss every day, loved that car.
