Title: RNS/RCD 510
Post by: flywalker on 09 October 2008, 14:41
My wife recently bought a 2005 Golf GTI . I would like to install the RCD 510 or maybe even the Rns 510. I saw previous posts made
reference to a different can bus standard for  MY05 cars and perhaps the need for a can bus adapter to get the RCD/RNS 510 to work ? The car has an rcd 300 installed and basic trip computer without MFSW. Has anyone out there upgraded their '05 car with either of the above stereos? Is it just a straight swap ?
Any help would be appreciated.

To my knowledge if you are just upgrading to another VW spec headunit then all the CANBUS systems are the same on the back of the headunit. Its only if you are upgrading to an aftermarket unit (Alpine, Kenwood etc) that you may want the CANBUS (I have upgraded to Alpine and do not have the adaptor for example).

I haven't heard of anything on the Golf MK5, the only ones where there was is a CAN BUS version issue (1.6 to 2.0 I believe is  :undecided:) was on the early Toureg and T5 Vans for the RNS-510.

Have a look at www.vwnavi.com to get 100% confirmation though.

To answer my own question.. ...I replaced an RCD300 with an RCD510 in our my05 gti  today without a problem. Just a direct swap, plug n play.

Steve, the nav disc you got with your 510, does it give the full post code option, or just part (like mine )? I have been told there is a updated CD that has the full post code option on it, but when asking VW, they said it's £160 . All I need to do is put it in my unit for a sec so it can download the disc on to the hard drive. Sod paying £160 for it though..  :undecided:

do you get a partial search on the postcode , as there wasnt a full search available when i last looked (disc version 3) ?, what CD version are you on , also if your on 2 the dealer was supposed to upgrade you to 3 for free (not sure there still doing this though

Just checked mate and it's V3 i've got. So there isn't a full 6 digit postcode option available then? :undecided:

^^^ TC was close it's a max 5 character entry

So for "NN11 1AA" all you can enter is "NN11 1" and then select the street from within that district.

In this day and age that isn't great but far better than the early versions of the RNS-510 mapping disc.

Oh arse!!!  Pain really, as you still need the road name with the postcode, so it's not that much of an advantage over ones without Postcode software.. Awsome unit, but shame the nav part of it gets out done by my old 3 yeard old basic Tom Tom one  :undecided:.. You'd think for nearly £2000, it would have it really.. Never mind, i'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it..

One other thing.. Can you get a speed display up at all (GPS speed)? Another thing the old Tom Tom has which I haven't found that the 510 does..  :undecided:

Not that I have managed to find.. and still found myself using my tom tom on my way down the A1 last time just to check all the speed camera updates were correct (which they were ).. and obviously the audio on the tom tom helps too. but doesnt the RNS510 look soooooo pretty

Yep, that plus full postcode look-up and I would be an even happier man.

One good thing is while it's still a current unit with the latest generation cars there is at least hope of improved software over the coming months

Without trying to sound like a dick (I am going to be biased in my opinion here) I have spent considerably less than that in upgrading my HU to an decent Alpine HU (only single din mind you), 2 8'' subs and an amp to power it all. I am also planning up on upgradeing the speakers and will still have spent A LOT less than £750. I know it does look pretty and all but an aftermarket HUs with a decent sub and amp with upgraded speakers is going to sound a million times better.

Just my 2 pence worth.

No, you're perfectly entitled to pick what's best for you. Sounds like you have a nice system.

All I want is NAV and a decent functioning ipod link in an OEM bundle.. I know I could get a double din aftermarket one cheaper, but it won't work with my full computer and they just scream "pinch me"

I can put it in my MKVI GTI/Scirocco in 12 months time when I swap cars too.

I believe so, but the hard drive (which has 18GB of usable space after the maps are loaded) is better than having a few SD hards floating around.

Last time I cleaned the inside of the car I nearly lost an SD card to the vacuum cleaner

I guess it depends on the price difference between the 2 units, some times it's worth paying a bit more - other times it's enough difference to make it easy to live with.

Oh, another question. Has anyone looked into retro-fitting some of the Rocco's HK upgrades??

Appols for a bit of hi-jack here but I'm looking to upgrade my RCD300 to something that isn't naff.  I'd love to get an RNS510 but paying about £1k for a jumped up tom tom is far too much for me so am looking at an older MFD2.

Now this may seem like a stupid question but does the MFD2 store the nav maps internally like the RNS or does it need to have the DVD in all the time?  This would presumably rule out playing a CD at the same time as having the Nav disk in?

An update on the rcd 510 recently installed in my 05 GTI. The car  battery started to go flat if unused for about 2 days.
Took it to an auto electrician & he confirmed the stereo is constantly drawing on the battery when off. He reckons the stereo is
preventing the cars electrical system from going into " sleep mode" when car is parked up. He reckons it may need programming  with Vag-Com . Anyone have any ideas  ?

you can play discs via the 6 disc player while using the sat nav ! imo vw sat nav is crap , ive got the mfd 2 in mine and its rubbish for sat nav , dont think its changed in the rns either the limited post code and its mapping are very poor go buy a nav man , much better !

Does the MFD2 have a built in 6 disc changer or do you mean the armrest changer?  I have the ipod adaptor in there at the moment and despite its limitations would probably keep that with the MFD2.

I appreciate what your saying about the crap sat nav but to be honest I'm only changing it for a bit of dashboard bling, and better sound quality? I've managed the last three years without sat nav so anything will be an improvement!

you are wrong candyman, as the RNS 510 does 3D mapping, which the MFD2 cannot.

also the postcode isnt perfect but works pretty good.
