Title: Trying to find out the roots of my engine
Post by: bluestreak56 on 26 September 2008, 09:24
Hi all,

I recently purchased a VW Scirocco GT2 (1992) which has had a 1.8 Gti 16v conversion...

Unfortunately the guy that sold it to me had no service history for the engine itself and he and his brother (who carried out the work) told me 2 different things as to where the engine came from.

The owner said it was from a mark 2 gti ..
His brother who fitted it said it was from a mark 1 cabriolet gti.

I was wondering if there was any way to tell which car it was actually from and to find out roughly how much mileage it had done .. ?

Cheers

I looked long and hard to find my perfect Rocco (Ive been in love with them since I was about 13 but couldnt afford the insurance on one till now!)

Saw this beaut with the injected engine, MFA, probably the only scirocco with power steering and just had to have it

Hello and welcome.

It will be a KR lump from a Golf mk2

Cheers wayned

I had a feeling that was the case but I also saw that apparently a 16v Gti Mark 1 Cab was made elsewhere?

Is it possible that my engine was originally from a mk2 then transplanted to a mk 1 cabby and is now in my car?

If so is there any way to tell or to guage the true mileage?

Many thanks guys

You're never going to be able to suss out the mileage or the origins of your engine without all the paperwork from the cars it was removed from. If it doesnt smoke, rattle, boil or otherwise give you grief then just keep it well maintained and enjoy it.

hello and welcome

they never did a 16v mk1 so it would of been a conversion if it was from one.

Hey guys,

I've been doing some further snooping around on the web to try and find out what my engine actually came from and found the following engines:

All of these are FF 4 cylinder 1781 cc 16v but the interesting this is they all vary in BHP, PS & torque (except the Passat and Jetta which are the same)

Can anyone tell me why the 1990 Gti has less output? And if theres any way to tell which one of these engines could be mine ... ?

1990 Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=101530

1988 Volkswagen Passat GT 16v http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=15994

1988 Volkswagen Jetta GTi 16v http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=15807

1988 Volkswagen Corrado 16v http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=15609

1986 Volkswagen Scirocco 16v http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=38918

1986 Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=40458

I would have assumed they were all the same engine but was surprised to see little differences here and there..

Would appreciate any help!

Many thanks

Just found out the difference between the 86 Gti (137bhp) and the 90 Gti (127bhp) is that the 86 was a KR and the 90 was a PL

The 1990 being the catalyst version and the 86 being pre-cat...

Does anyone know if they are all the same engine?

All UK 16v's were KR and 137bhp. PL must be a US engine or something.

Carfolio is american, so all of they have cat's and the smaller inlet manifold.

'Euro' ones are all the same.

Pretty much what Nick said, however there maybe a code stamped on the front of the block, probs says KR as this is the engine code that was on mk2 16v, correct me if I'm wrong but believe cabby had same engine as mk2 as they crossed over rather than redesign cabby for mk2. Also if there is a barcode on the camcover within the letters of that there is the engine code which will tell you all you need to know.

hope this helps

PS, sweet 'rocco. Still looks good.

Best regards AL
