My stealer is going to fit a new rack for me, (bit of grind)
Anybody else had top layer of painting peeling off front ed30 lip ?
Quoted £263 for service, sound about right ?
-
£263 Quid for the first service seems a bit steep to me :undecided:.
-
I said the same thing to the stealer. They said I do get a free 1 litre tub of oil.
-
My First service set me back £150 a couple of months ago so that does seem quite expensive!
Just out of interest, does the rack make a grinding noise as you apply lock?
Ta
-
Il service should be anything from 120 -160 I would expect - call another dealer and price match with your local if you can ;)
-
by, where is the grind noise from ?, does it sound like plastic rubbing ?
-
Find a local Seat or Å koda stealer, get a quote, and then get the dub stealer to price match.

I'm wondering the same thing, as that is the sound I'm getting. I get exactly the same sound in my Q7 as well, I was wondering whether I was imagining it!

I got mine back from stealers yesterday after its first service, wanted to charge £255 but reminded them i took out the 3yr service plan so payed nothing, they even forgot to charge me for fitting my new itg air filter which they said would charge £40.
Slightly off topic, maybe tt can help they did not recommed fitting the likes of itg,k&n as they are oil based and it can sucked into the engine and cause problems to the tune of £300, I said fit anyway so they did. any thoughts ?

All "foam" type air filters which use oil are a very bad idea - for all modern engines, petrol or diesel - which have a "Mass Air Flow" (MAF) sensor.
Most modern MAFs are based on the "hot wire" principle, whereby a voltage is applied across a very fine wire, which then heats up to a certain pre-determined temperature. When the engine is running, it "sucks" air into the combustion chambers. When this air passes over the hot wire, the airflow cools the wire. The greater the volume of air, or the greater the speed of the air over the hot wire = the greater cooling effect. The ECU monitors the voltage required to keep the wire at the correct temp, and adjusts the fuel delivery accordingly.
Now, this wire gets extremely hot - hot enough to burn you if you touch it. The problem with oiled air filters is that some of the oil will vapourise and form a mist, which will then get sucked past the MAF along with the air flow. Any oil which touches the hot wire will get "burned on" to the surface. Overtime, the wire will get a coating of carbon, and its efficiency will reduce, making the car run rough, and give poor fuel economy.
When the MAF wire gets covered, you can sometimes clean it with carb cleaner, though this isn't very effective, and usually means a new MAF, at around £80 to £160 a time - plus labour charges.

....EEK!! - I thought that my ITG Pro panel filter wasn't oiled! They certainly instruct NOT to oil it.

Trouble is, not oiling an air filter which is designed to be oiled dramatically reduces the effectiveness of the filter. The dust and crap is meant to "stick" to the oil, and you periodically remove the filter, wash it in specific solvent, re-oil it, and refit it. If it aint oiled, then your engine is digesting a lot of unnecessary crap, especially if you live near a beach, or in a dusty area.
I think the dry "cotton" types are supposed to be the best compromise between improvement over standard paper filters, and performance increases.
Usual disclaimer applies though - ETTO.

back on topic, thats way to much for a first service which is basically an oil change, I think I paid 112quid or thereabouts, the second service should be about the price you have been quoted
-
yeh on topic of the steering rack, what was the symptoms ?
-
I asked the dealer, purely out of interest as I have the first 3 services included as part of the VWFS package, what my first 10K service would have cost when it was done a couple of weeks ago and quoted around £125.
-
I will me ringing around come service time and see what I can get of down to

Not if you are on the LongLife regime, as the first service will be the 20k "interval service". If you are on T&D, then the first service is just an oil change. :nerd:
-
O yeh, never though of that, because I do T & T I presumed everyone does
-
first service i paid £100 and second service £190 so try and play 2 dealers against each other for a price match
-
It's hard to describe the noise, it's only slight and mainly on left hand lock. You can feel it more than hear it. The engineer jacked up the front of the car and said he could feel a bit of grind as he turned the steering using the wheels.
I'll let you know when it's been sorted if it solves the noise.
Thanx for the advice I'll have a ring round to see if I can get a better service price.
BTW I am on variable length, car now at 20K miles.

Eeeewwww!
LongLife servicing really is not good for a GTI. Do you regularly give it some beans? Or even let the revs regularly rise above 3,000 rpm? If so, then get it off LongLife, and switch to Time and Distance (T&D) servicing.

Only time it's below 3000 RPM is when it's parked
I only ever drive on the paddles and thrash it given every available opportunity. *
I do a lot of miles (mostly motorway) and thought that cost of ownership would be lower on long life.
Clearly not if they charge twice the price though !
Oil has not dropped from full since the day I got it
*(clearly subject to road conditions and only where it is safe and legal)

....I hope you are joking.

Thrash is a relative term. I mean I don't use the launch feature at EVERY traffic light I stop at but I do open her up quite regularly.
Lets face it there would be no point buying a Bison horn flute if you were not going to blow it

Yes, I did think after I'd posted that I'd probably overreacted/misinterpreted your language.

Then you are clearly not able to comply with the specific operating requirments of the LongLife servicing regime, and therefore, you would be very strongly advised to change to T&D servicing (but still use the higher quality LongLife oils).
Regarding costs, with the T&D service, then you only have to have an extra oil and filter change at 12 months or 10k miles, and should be had for around £55-65, if you use the price-match facilty, and even cheaper if you supply your own oil at cost prices.
Come resale time, and many potential owners who have "read up" and done some research, will know that the GTI really does need to be on T&D servicing, rather than LongLife - and whilst it is questionable weather T&D servicing will "add value", it will most certainly add to the desireablity.
-
...My VW dealer strongly recommended I go on T&D from day-one :afro:

Thanks for the info, It's going in on the 23rd Sept so i'll see if I can have the service scheme swapped.

OK. If the muppets at the stealers are unable to change the service regime, then you can change it yourself to T&D.

how ? Or do you mean just getting it done yearly

If you started off on LongLife, and you are comming up to its first LongLife servic, then just ask the stealer to carry out the 2yr/20k Inspection service, but advise them you want to change onto T&D (so they set the SID correctly). :nerd:
If, for some reason, they cant change it to T&D, maybe because you have a lease car, or are on a maintentance plan which only included LongLife - then let them do the service as normal, and then when you collect the car afterwards, manually reset the service interval yourself. There is a sticky (by the Doc) in the maintenance section which tells you how.
Does that make sense?

I'm now a happy bunny, rang a VW dealer closer to home and they said £150 all in, rang back to the 1st dealer to negotiate or cancel and they could not match so I cancelled. It's now going in this Friday.
The only downside is I'm not going to get the rack and paint done at the same time, they want to check it out first and start the process again.
£113 saved thanks to my chums on the forum, thanx again.
