Title: 5 month wait
Post by: gtewary on 01 September 2008, 09:18
Hi all!
I ordered a Golf GTI on 12th June and was told I could expect a late Sept- early Oct delivery. Now 'it looks like Oct end' as per my last conversation. Delaer is Lister's at Coventry.
Is this normal waiting time?
What's the general experinece??
Thanks- I'm looking for ammo for when I call the dealer again!

12-16 weeks the norm, however the VW factory shuts down for 2 weeks in August for holidays

Ask your dealer to confirm when the car was actually ordered by them and at what stage the build is at now. Some dealers get extra build slots but at this stage it is unlikely to affect your build date.

Did you change your spec at any time after placing the order as this would have delayed the build ?

No I didn't add anything to the spec- but I remember when I first ordered it was told the car was in a que too be ordered! Think was actually placed about 2 weeks later. Will ring and confirm details later today.
Thanks.

She says it was ordered when I placed the order and she can't tell me what stage it is at- it's in a queue waiting to be built.
Absolutley insists no one get cars quicker than anyone else and no matter where I ordered it would be the same.
Anyone got concrete delivery times less than the 18weeks it looks like it is going to be for me?

Thats interesting!

I ordered mine mid July (can't remember the exact date now). I was told 6-8 weeks! A couple of weeks ago i was told that it is due to be built in the week of the 15th Sept and delivery 1/2 weeks after that.

I will be checking with the dealer at the weekend to see if there is a more definate date and let you know.

Interestingly, my dad ordered a BMW 5 series just 2 weeks ago, and that will be delivered mid-Oct, so I don't really know why VW takes so long compared to BMW, since both have a 2 week August factory shutdown! Any ideas anyone?

Post by: gtewary on 01 September 2008, 10:41
Thanks for that. Could you tell me dealers name and dates? I would love to confront my dealer with that info- somehow have a suspicion everything's not kosher!
Title: Re: 5 month wait
Post by: Pirelli_P on 01 September 2008, 10:50
The dealer is Ridgeway Reading.

As i said for now i am expecting delivery in 2nd week of Oct, 3rd week latest really, i think they said its in VWs interest to get it to me ASAP so maybe 1st week of Oct. No definitive dates as of yet!

I am going to the dealer on Sat as my sister taking delivery of her car, so I will try and get a more accurate date and post it here. Might be better to quote that info to your dealer as (i hope it hasn't) the situation may have changed. Either way it was never anywhere near 12-16 weeks!

I ordered my GTI on Saturday 12th April and took delivery on the Saturday 21st June. I got mine from Wayside Milton Keynes.

that works out as a 12 week lead time.

Hope this helps and you get your car soon.

This isn't going to help, buti had a factory order iwas told to expect 10 to 12 week's my build date came through a few week's after order and this turned out to be 8 weeks from first order it then arrived 5 days later
Your dealer should have given you a confirmed build date by now. I was told that once i had this it wasn't set in stone but very rarely changed.
Title: Re: 5 month wait
Post by: SteveP on 01 September 2008, 11:06
Mine was also originally quoted as 10-12 weeks and took the full 12 to arrive.

However it can sometimes depend on the options you have selected, when ordering a Passat B6 (company car) around 3 years ago adding the MFSW increased the waiting from 10-12 to 18-20 weeks, normally the dealer (or lease company as it was in this case) should tell you this after the order was placed on the VW systems.

Well my exact order is- 3 door diamond black with DVD(£1400), sunroof, cruise, armrest, ext pack, winter pack and maybe few other bits and bobs.
hanks for all the info- i will definitely try and get some dates out of them!
Title: Re: 5 month wait
Post by: Pirelli_P on 01 September 2008, 11:13
Maybe the 12 - 16 week wait is still what they're quoting.

Isn't a Pirelli prepared by VW Individual like the ED30 was? I know my dealer is actually using another dealer's built slot for me to get mine because they had used all their 3 Pirelli build slots at that time. So maybe thats why I seem to have had slightly less of a wait compared to if i had ordered a regular GTI?

I am 100% certain that your dealer will have a build date by now and should have passsed it on to you or at the very least get them to explain why they have not give you one. a build date that is

That sounds just like my spec, except mine was 5 door. Diamond black, Winter pack, luxury pack, RNS510, DSG, arm rest, MFSW, 6 cd changer.

Good luck

hmmm...looks like all the extras I ordered are partly to blame. Be interested to know whom you dealt with at Lister's in Coventry- was it Tasha?
Title: Re: 5 month wait
Post by: 08micsta on 01 September 2008, 16:33
We waited six months. We originally wanted an .:R32 but after being told the waiting list was a year and a half we said no thanks and got the gti 6 months later. Full house.

The wait is what makes the car even more special. Its like the design feauture in the boot that showers you upon opening once it has rained....

i waited 18 weeks for mine, which was bad times.

but then i picked it up and its been good times ever since, love it.

i remember getting so annoyed when the dealer kept moving the goal posts with my order, it went from early May, to late May, to July, but eventually turned up in mid June.

it'll turn up and be worth it. just make sure you get the maximum discount you can to compensate.

Worth a shout - threaten to cancel unless they confirm a specific build/delivery date. I'm sure if you shop around you might get a factory build at somewhere near your spec.

4 week's sound's a bit excessive to me i cannot think of a reason why it would take that long. I would be sitting down with the stealer and asking him to talk me through the reason why it takes 4 weeks to put the car on a transporter drive onto a ferry drive off and prep the car.

So do they only inform you of the build date a few days before the actual date and If I'm expecting mine mid-end oct should I only expect a build date mid-end sept?

well they have updates through every tuesday and friday so he phones me or i phone him on a friday to get updates. i have known for about 3 or 4 weeks that the car will have been built by the 2nd week of september.

TC i thought this too. i will wait for him to come back with a date next friday and if he says its going to be another 4 weeks i will ask why cause germany isnt that far away really lol

May be something is going on at the factory, who knows when i got mine i placed the orderand recieved this in a e-mail.

The vehicle has been ordered, all as per your signed order and ordered the
same day with the dealer
The next coimmunication will be when the vehicle changes status to a factory
build date !

Once the vehicle is ordered the order status is awaiting factory build date
, nothing happens for between 3/4 weeks
Until the vehicle has a production build date, then the contacts are more
frequent as you will be advised when the vehicle is being built, awaiting
ship, arriving in the UK, then a registration number is issued, at this
point an insurance is required and delivery arranged.  The balance of the
invoice (paid directly to the dealer)to be made prior to delivery

then i got this exactly a month later.

Hi Thomas

Please see below the factory tracking number that is for your Golf

Kind Regards

Then this
2 days later
Hi Tom,

Good news.
Your order for the golf has been frozen for production week 15
this means that it should be built that week however it could still change either way
the next stage will be ' confirmed build week...' then it is definately to be built that week
generally it takes 3 weks to the dealer once in build

Cheers

Brian

Then finally this

Dear Thomas,

Good news for the weekend
Your vehicle is now completed production and on ship to UK,

Should be with dealer approx 10 days
I will advise final details and registration number etc hopefully end next week

Kind Regards

Brian

I think the delay in yours is getting the build date slot or a frozen date when the car gets built. it only takes them 2 or 3 weeks to build, most of it will already be done. the 10 days to get it to me from the build complete stage actually took just 5 days
Please excuse me if this has confused you more it's frazzled my brain trying to copy and paste from different emails.

Mine was about the same as TC's, took 12 days from leaving the factory to being ready to collect at the dealership.

But to start with the dealer was also quoting upto 4 weeks from the build date.

My complete guess is.
Because of the Pirelli coming out to play VW are not willing to give out build start dates, i think this because they have to rely on supplier's getting them stuff that would normally be in stock I.E. seats made out of tyres.  no offence intended mr P.
This could be affecting normal GTI build slot's as well.
I am probably talking a load of Tosh though. but whats new

I think you will find it is not stealing from a ship wreck and yes  scouser;s would strip the beach of anything worth selling just like anyone else. But i can assure you your Pirelli would still be sitting there on its lonesome.   Touche i believe.

Just been on the phone to the bloody stealers. Tells me the delay is because of the Satnav I've ordered. Says I have 2 options- either wait for the satnavs (don't know how long) or cancel that and 'hope' for a build in 2 weeks for delivery in November!
bearing in mind I ordered 12/6/08 that will be a 5 month wait for not exactly what I ordered.
What would you do?
Shall I cut my losses and opt for someething else?
Or go for option without satnav and get it retrofitted?

Me personally i would cancel the satnav and try and get some compo for the crap 2 option's offered to you it's cheaper to retro fit as well. If they keep mucking you about like this you might even get  the final digit on the final placque.

Have had to cancel my order as even after deleting the satnav delivery was 'November maybe'. I think they have used up quota to buy Sciroccos instead. Saw one in Pearlescent black- looked real good and am thinking of going for that instead! Meanwhile am stuck for  a car!

I got my car on saturday!

I have been resisting divulging this info and posting pics until I had some credible photos given the standard of some I have seen, plus im waiting for a couple of "bits and bobs" to be finished before I post the complete car!

I know my car is a bit like marmite, love it or hate it, so I want to do it justice with some reasonable shots before it gets judged! lol

Anyway thats it really. I'll get it sorted in a day or two!

I'll be seeing his car tomorrow evening - first one I've seen in real life!

I hope it looks better than in the photos!!

But as Phil said...very unique, and a model that could be desirable in the future to those in the "know-how"...
