Title: Got myself a DNX 7200!
Post by: SKAVIA on 28 August 2008, 23:15
Nice unit - weighed up all the pro's and con's of seperate bluetooth, nav and ipod usability and this ticked all the boxes.
I'm trying to run the ipod wire to the armrest so I can make use of the slot - thats the only good thing about the standard VW prep.
Also, the blutooth unit is asking for a code to pair my phone - anyone know what this is?  :undecided:

0000? All my other BT phones had this code.

Is this the only unit that allows for a reverse/parking camera? I really like the look of the RNS-510. Don't know whether it'd accept a camera input though.

Yeah, I'd try 0000 or 1234.

It only asks for a code with certain makes of phone, luckily mine didn't ask.

I beleive you make up the code...just need to make sure you enter the same code on your HU and your Phone

Yep . Some bluetooth devices ask for this - but if one device is asking for it then the other device will too. Just make sure you use the same number and it should be fine.

Most Double-DIN A/V and Sat Nav Headunits (and some single DIN with pop-out screens) support a the reverse camera input.

Also the RNS-510 does support a reverse camera but like most OEM retro-fits it's not as cheap as the aftermarket equivalent.

Excellent. Think I'll look up the specs of the RNS-510 against the DNX7200.

I just ran my ipod cable to the armrest of my new stereo on Wednesday.
With my previous stereo I disassembled the whole armrest and it was a total pain - but this time I found an easy way that took me 10 mins.

You can do it by simply pulling the gear gaiter off and taking out the ashtray with 2 x torx screws.   Feed the cable from the stereo down to here and then push it through into the drivers footwell.
If you open the armrest and remove the rubber bottom, you should be able to pull open a compartment.  Remove 1 x torx screw from above the bit you've just opened and you should be able to loosen off the armrest a bit.  Now you can feed the cable directly from your drivers footwell straight into the gap you've made between the armrest / bottle opened compartment - and grab it with your hand and pull it into the armrest.

Tuck the cable up into the center bit, then pull the iPod end and it should pull it all tight so that the cable is no longer visible.  With a bit of poking you should be able to get all the cable inside the center bit so that its under the bottle opener bit.

Title: Re: Got myself a DNX 7200! - All installed!
Post by: SKAVIA on 29 August 2008, 20:04
Hey guys - 7200 now all installed (bluetooth code was 1234) - thanks for all your help!
Thanks to P3eps - ipod video cable run like you said and now my ipod sits in its original factory ipod dock but with my new cable at it's base.
Had to dismantle the whole lot, enlarge the hole at the bottom of the cradle slightly and plug in my new cable. Its a perfect fit and a lovely unit!

All I need now is the reversing camera (have already run the wire for this) and maybe the DVB tv....££££!

Evening TC.

The DNX 7200 is a very good unit, personally think the menus could be a bit better  :undecided:

My personal fav's are: -

Pioneer F900BT (Good flush fitting as long as you don't mind big knobs!) - http://www.pioneer.co.uk/images/products/relation/241/18210/canbebuiltinto/pioneer/vwgolf_tdi_large.jpg

Also there's the more expensive Alpine IVA-W505R Screen & PMD-B200P Nav Unit (New Dock and Roll tech, great if you ever use a second car and want portable nav as well) -
http://www.alpine-europe.com/DocknRoll/

Cheer's SteveP i really like the fit of the pioneer, not to sure about the big knob ( Open's window for the Frankie Howard jokes  )
I cant remember what your opinion was on the Zenec one that would definatly be a consideration aswel because of the oem look. my link wont work for this anymore and i cant remember who ordered one.

To me if you want the OEM look then the RNS-510 is the only way to go, yes it's very expensive for what it is but it looks and performs much better that the Windows CE based units (the ones mainly found on ebay) and so far the Zenec is relatively unproven.

Also my link to the main zenec website isn't working either, but here's UK company who supply them http://www.raysmith.co.uk/ZE-NC2000/

The amount of RNS-510 available second hand should start to increase now with the amount of VAG cars which now use them, so hopefully the prices should start to drop as well.

Can I ask - have you ever used one of these?
I'm just curious as I bought one a few weeks ago and fitted it to my MK5.  Agreed, it looks really nice and the interface is good - but the unit itself is absolutely dreadful!

For a start it takes about 1 - 1.5 minutes to actually start up from when you turn the key.  Pretty useless for anyone with a reverse cam!  Sit and wait a minute before you reverse!  It has the most horrific beep noise everytime you press a button / touch the screen - which you CANT turn off!!  You can turn the volume right down, but can't turn it off.  The volume for this is the same as the navigators voice volume - so turning that down means no directions!
Theres also the huge box for your next direction - one for the arrow and one for the instruction.  These are fine if you're navigating ie. a left arrow and 'turn left in 200 yards' - but they remain and take up a large portion of the screen even when you're not navigating.  The map seems to spin round the nav arrow if you're on a hill as it can't figure out which way you're travelling at low speeds.
The 'night mode' is controlled by what time the unit thinks it should get dark - not when you put your lights on.
I could write a list of heaps more - but if you log into www.avic411.com you'll get info from loads of dissapointed people... and a few who try to stick up for the unit because they've spent £800 on it!!

In summary - mine was playing up when playing DVD's / iPod Video and had black flickering lines appearing all the time.  I called support (USELESS) who told me to contact where I'd bought it from.  They told me to try a software update (No difference) and then said to return it for a replacement.  I told them just to keep it and got a full refund.
An overall horrible experience to be honest - and I'm still out of pocket for a £45 Pioneer -> MK5 Golf fitting kit, and a £30 iPod cable.

Most of these faults are software problems and as its a new unit, alot of them may be ironed out with updates... but I can't see the unit ever starting up quickly as it runs Windows CE.

An overall bad experience for me - I then looked at a Kenwood 8220BT which was similarly priced and featurewise.  The Kenwood booted up in about 10 seconds and did everything I wanted - but was not compatible with my phone (my whole reason for ditching my Alpine unit in the first place).  I settled for a single DIN JVC unit which works with my phone and does everything apart from Sat Nav.  I prefer being able to take the face off - as I felt paranoid about leaving an £800 stereo on display which can be removed in about 20 seconds by a pro!

All personal opinions obviously... but I'd seriously recommend looking at that AVIC411 forums if you're even remotely considering a Pioneer F900BT unit!

Hey TC - So far so good with the stereo - it's packed with features which I'm still learning how to use but for £500 (off fleaBay) you'd be hard pressed to find a double-din touch screen unit with Garmin Sat Nav, excellent iPod control, TMC traffic updates, handsfree bluetooth and DVD/DivX player. Also rear-view cam input and dual zone (meaning the rear of the car can watch a dvd on screens or listen to music while the front can have the nav or another source).
I'm sure there are slightly better/newer units out there, but for me this had everything I wanted at a reasonable price.
I fitted it all myself (not difficult) and am very pleased with the result. The dash looks much cleaner without the Parrot bluetooth and tomtom unit.

My experience of the unit was from a demo at a show, a real world experience like yours is a very helpful input, so thanks.

I have previously had the Pioneer X1R (Single DIN Pop-out screen) and AVIC-D3 (Double DIN), and other than a bit of slow screen refresh between screens found the Pioneer headunit's to be superb, it's a real shame they have failed on this one.

It was 2nd hand but still had warranty until Dec 08. Boxed, with all the manuals and receipts.
Came with iPod video cable (£40), KCA-BT100 blutooth module (£80) and TMC traffic module with subscription paid (£30).
I bought the facia for £4 off a friend who owns a car hi-fi shop but they can be found on ebay for £10.
True, the menu's could be slicker, but once you know how to use them it's easy. Can't go wrong for the money.
