Hi Guys
Was having a look on Foxy's website the other day and saw his puddle light mod...
For those who don't know what they are, they're LEDs which go in the bottom of the wing mirror and come on when you open the door, the circuitry keeps them on for about a minute after the door is shut so you can see your way in the dark and avoid 'puddles'!
After hours of playing with transistors and capacitors this is what I came up with:
The unit goes inside the doorcard, one wire goes to ground, one the courtesy light wire and one to permanent 12v. The final wire goes to an LED in the wing mirror, if you look underneath the wing mirrors on the Mk4 there is a small black plastic plug which pulls out and the exposed hole fits a 5mm LED perfectly!
What do you rekon?
-
Good idea!
Get it installed and show some more pictures of them working.
Then sell them to people on here and eBay and make lots of pennies!
Tim
-
Sounds interesting mate get em fitted and show us some pics.
-
Here we go lads

Bit wet outside!!
-
Pictures in the dark would be good!
-
Haha yeah, when it gets dark I'll take some
-
GROUP BUY
if it looks good of course
-
Turn the lights out
Down with a group buy if it looks good.
-
The LED is white and one of the brightest I could find so it casts a good light on the floor. It's always possible to drill another hole in the base and add an extra LED for extra brightness. The actual base of the wing mirror (black plastic) is separate from the rest of the wing mirror unit (attached by 2 screws) so I'd supply those new with the LED(s) already attached. Anyway, I'll get some pics later on for you to see.
-
Here's the pics
Best I could do, doesn't really do it justice...

You say final wire goes to the LED. Surely the LED needs two wires? :)
-
You say final wire goes to the LED. Surely the LED needs two wires? :)
It does, but its just an earth so it can be put to any suitable earthing point, not related to the circuit board
-
Where do you pick up the earth and 12v from?
-
do they come on if you unlock the car? or is it when you open the door?
-
do they come on if you unlock the car? or is it when you open the door?
I imagine they're triggered whenever the courtesy light is on.
-
Where do you pick up the earth and 12v from?
The earth can be taken from the door itself by attaching the wire behind one of the nuts in the door panel.
The courtesy light is also used as a constant 12v because the + wire is always 12v, its the -ve that's switched.
do they come on if you unlock the car? or is it when you open the door?
They're triggered by the courtesy light, but there's no reason why they couldn't be triggered by the interior light (which comes on when you press unlock on the fob).
-
Great work mate :)

well if they can be wired to the interior light than thats great - then when you unlock your car from a distance you get some extra light before you get to the car
i assume you just wire it into the power source for the interior light?
-
Be a long piece of wire :)

only the length i currently have for the W8 light

Yeah, either at the light itself or somewhere closer to the door. It may be possible to splice a wire behind the fuse box. That'd be something i'd find out before they're sold and would be in the instructions
-
Would we get pretty idiots guide pictures? :)

They look cool im down with a set of these will have them ready for when I get my new toy
-
I've been working on these for the past few weeks now and have come up with this:
(http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/2141/10102008003sk5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
(http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/10102008003sk5.jpg/1/w640.png) (http://g.imageshack.us/img516/10102008003sk5.jpg/1/)
It is now completely plug and play (plugs into the loom behind the trim on the passenger's side A pillar) - so no wiring required!
The lights now come on when the car is unlocked with the key fob as well as when a door is opened
Also, the time the lights stay on after a door is closed can be adjusted from 10s to 90s by turning a dial on the circuit board
Two superbright white LEDs with wiring are included (although not pictured)
Sent Rhyso his today, if anyone else would like a set they cost £35 inc post, let me know!
-
what do they do?
-
Sorry, should have said, its all on page 1!
-
ah yeh just read page one sorry. Sounds good
-
no problem
-
What happens though is some nonce smashes your mirror off?
-

you buy a new mirror
don't understand your question Bob
-
They'd smash your little LED and wiring out too.
-
as well as the heated mirror and mirror motor wiring...
but i wouldn't let the chance of that happening stop me!
-
They'd smash your little LED and wiring out too.
well yeah thats a risk you take unfortunately :undecided:
should have the kit on Monday so hopefully give it a go at fitting after work
-
Let us know. It's a cool kit, but I won't bother whilst I live in the area that I do.
-
If something like that did happen, the LED and its wiring could be replaced for about £2... the more expensive electronics are housed inside the car away from the chavs!!

How come they're £40 here, but you're doing them on ukmkiv for £35? :)

Dont miss much do you Bob!
Because between posting this last night and posting on UKMkIVs this morning I found some of the bits cheaper if I buy in bulk so I passed on the £5 saving
Hadn't updated it on here yet! Have now..
-
Hehe :)
Where do you source your parts from by the way? I always end up going the way of the Maplin!
-
Yeah, ususally maplin. Rapid can be good too

My puddle light kit turned up this morning

shhhh - took her out Friday and Saturday night (missus NOT the car!)

bet the car went too though

These look cool - does the fact having heated mirrors make a difference?
Is the £35 for a pair or a single?
And finally i'd love to see how easy they are to fit - i need them idiot proof!
Thanks,
CS

No, heated mirrors don't make a difference
The price is for the pair
And they're literally plug & play

how else would we get to where we were going

Very tempted... be cool to see an install guide before buying one - other than that i'm 90% sure i'll grab a pair.

im in the middle of doing mine now - started at lunch time - the module itself is plug and play but running the wiring takes a bit of fiddling - i reckon its about an hours job in total as stereo has to come out and remove the covering under the steering wheel to run the driver's side LED
might have to remove the door cards to get the LED into the mirror housing too :undecided:

Hmm - not to bothered on removing the drivers door card as i've been putting off a blue led alarm mod i got moons ago!
Removing the stereo will be a pain in the rear as my ipod cable and bluetooth car kit took bloddy ages to sort :(
Keep us posted!

you only need to pull the stereo forward to run the cable behind it - no need to disconnect anything

Any more news mate? I'm keen to see how these look when fitted!

i'm working mate!!
only had 30 minutes for lunch and spent 15 of that having my lunch!!
don't have my camera with me but will take some pics tonight

It is actually possible to feed the wires in the gap behind the centre console (low down) - stick your arm through from the footwell!
Glad you've got them working Rhys!!

i haven't mate - had to abandon the install - was a bit naive and forgot the door cards had to be removed to feed the wires up to the mirrors unless you know of a crafty trick
also sent you a PM too

Don't get me wrong, I like what you've done. But isn't the location in the wing mirror not the best place, surely the door bottom, closer to the B post would be better. Therefore when you open the door the light swings out in a larger arc over the area where you will actually place your feet. So when you exit the car you can see where to put your feet. The door mirror location will be obstructed by the door? Try putting your feet on the floor directly below the door mirror. Just a thought? That's how it is on my Saab, and the Swedes are supposed to be good at the this ergonomic sh*te.

I see what you mean, but if they were in the bottom of the door then they would only function when the door was open.
When they're in the wing mirrors they can illumunate the floor once you've shut the door and are leaving the car as well as once you've unlocked the car and are approaching it.
I've seen a few Fords and Skodas with them in the wing mirrors
-
We want pictures, we want pictures
-
Remove the door cards, if it's worth doing, do it properly :)
-
you're going to have to wait for pictures as sadly its a bigger job than first meets the eye
the unit gtitdi has designed works well but at the moment its currently lighting up the inside of my mirror base as i'm stuck!!
i can't see a way to get the LED#s from the mirror housing into the mirror base :undecided:
@ Bob - you NEED to remove the door card - how else you going to run the wires?
you need to remove both door cards
the stereo or at least pull it forward
underneath the steering wheel
and the mirrors (unless i'm doing something wrong) but i've found it makes it a lot easier to run the wires
i've managed to hide the unit behind the passenger A Pillar trim by removing the rubber part at the bottom (i'll take a picture in the week to explain)
-
I know, I said you should remove them.

hopefully yes!!
i reckon the mod will be worthwhile just give yourself plenty of time
biggest problem i've found feeding the wire through the door - as often you need to poke the wires up or down and or through a specific gap which can be tricky
and i'd forgotten what a pain in the arse refitting a door card is

Go and fit it now, in the dark...
