Ask a question and you'll gain knowledge, don't ask and you remain a fool till you ask.

195/50 on a 7 inch aint no stretch. I'm have 195/45 on an 8 inch and it's only a slight stretch.
-
Nah not a stretch at all, it'll all be good, depending on the offset of the new wheels of course!!!

No probs dude, anytime you know that

So what size were standard GTI tyres (16v if it makes a difference)? Are they meant to be 195/50/15? We've currently got 205/50/15, and I was a little dissapointed to see my fav brand, the Eagle F1, was not in 205 fitment (well, not that I could find on Black Circles or MyTyres).
If standard is 195, I'll be a very happy boy.. Back to standard and 195/50/15 for £38.46 on blackcircles
-
I thought standard was 195/55/15 but I might be entirely wrong! 50s are better than 55s anyway.
-
Original, standard tyres were something really stupid like 185/60/15s
-
Oh my.. So really then, it seems there is a whole can of worms, embellished in the search function where the question:
"What is the best size/brand of tyre" has been asked a millions times already!
I'll get my searching skills out of their locker
-
the mk3 gti had 195/50 upto 1994 and then 205/50 after (and the 16v was no different!! but the vr had 205/50 all through its life)
-
Having searched, I think I'll prob try a full set of Eagle F1 GSD3's for what they cost in the 195 fitment. 10mm across the diameter isn't going to make a great deal of difference. Would get the same amount of difference in two differene manufacturers 205 tyres, due to how they make them..
(sits back and awaits the backlash )
-
I agree your correct..... I have fitted fulda tryes for extra clearance as the side walls are nice and square unlike michelin which have bowed sidewalls (and can cause clearance problems on very low cars)
my old 205's had real issues with this!!
-
I have 195/50/15 Eagle F1's and my car is very low. Not a problem with rubbing, the side walls are not bowed on the eagle f1's :D
-
ooopps ! I may well have confused here so I do apologise. I was talking about mk1/mk2 standard tyre size as there was no specific mk mentioned in the original question. I've no idea what the standard tyre size is for a mk3.
I'll get my coat.

I was waiting for the "diss the mk3 and its boat likeness!" gibby :undecided:

Will depend on what offset Mr Turners new wheels are going to be, as they are 7J they may well rub
I'm going back to 6.5J when I've got the money for new rims as I'm fed up of it!

if you aint scrubbin you aint dubbin or something like that aint it?
-
I'm running the standard rims now, and will prob just refurb them (and just dream of BBS!)
The 205/50's are rubbing on full lock now  It may well have lowering springs on.. Or knackered ones

I must be maturing in my old age.

i need some new rubber for my azevs - 16x7 et20
they got 205/50/16 on atm but they are bulgy and rub so much, i mean not drivable rubbing. It is the offset that causes probs. i want to get stretched rubber on them but not sure what will look "stretched" on them.
I was thinking 185/45/16 if i can find some or 195/40/16.
can anyone shed some light on this?
ohh and will i need new rubber though, if i roll/flare the arches? or do i do both???
Cheers!
LL ;)

205/50 are too big really.. the anni had 215/40x16 but 205/45x16 will be fine too (or 195/45 if you can find them cheap?) and get some nice squarish sidewall ones (falken are meant to be best for this??)
-
if i was to go for the stretched look..........

I know people who have 165 on 7" rims but its not something i would recommend.... 195 would be narrowist I would go for

I think you will struggle with that offset even if you switch tyres.
-
yeah, im gunna try and roll the arches out this weekend and test it with the azevs. then i will make a decision on what to do. Really want to keep the azevs, they look smart and the offset gives the car a good look, but 16" is a bad size for getting stretched rubber, as its hard to find rubber that goes less than 195.
Would 195/40 give a stretch on 7", probs not???
cheers, alex.

I have some monos for my Rallye and they have Toyo proxy T1-RS (I think that's the latest name) and they are 195/40/16 and they are only a very slight stretch. 195/40 on a 7" will be even less so. I think a slight stretch looks good, too much stretch doesn't really do it for me.
