....Would this topic be more appropriately posted in "Chat - VW related" ?? I don't know - There's definite interest here, but.

good work robin. The Scirocco looks good, but really think i still prefer the gti. What are the little bits attached to the bottom of your front bumper? (dont know their correct title but they look ) where abouts u get them from, how much? etc

You're right about the odd rear styling. The last picture from behind did make the back look a bit odd. At every other angle though it looks stunning!
I can see the modding community (AKA most of the VW community ) having fun with it .

Very good write up RR.

I thought when I had a go in one this week that with similar mods to what the majority of Gti owners carry out in their car would the Scirocco be the better car? I think yes and it will "steal" sales from the Gti where potential owners would have a 3 door.
I thought the build quality better than the Golf with the leather seats being the most noticible improvement in the quality and finish department.

Good review RR :afro: I was reading in a mag that the scirocco was going to be the new Audi TT

Also the 2.0T engine is not the same as the golf GTI 2.0T engine

Thanks RR, almost feel like I have been in the car myself now after your review!

Are you gunning for a job in Top Gear? :) ....spammiest job on telly, except for Kylie's bikini line inspector that is :)

I will be going to the dealer on Tuesday, hope they have a rocco in so I can have a look round myself.

Great review there RR, burning the midnight oil.  I love the front end and the whole car looks low and sleak in side profile. BUT I just can't get over that fat rear end and wide hips!!! Also the dials, they look so plain after the GTI. I thought that they might have used the GTI cowels, but I'm glad they didn't.

Thanks RR.  Top bloke.  Was wondering about the power you described.  How does it compare to your standard GTI before all the mods?  Reviews would say its lower profile means it's slightly more agile but that the power delivery is the same.

For the record I think it looks very sleek but I'm not completely sold on the looks.  I don't think it is quite as aggressive as the GTI.  I think I will wait a while to see what editions of it they bring out next year.

Very good write up RR, i completely agree with how colour sensitive the car is...that silver looked lovely!!! (And i dont normally like silver cars)! Am I right in saying this has the same engine as the GTi ?

Defiantly looks better in silver than the black one my local dealer has.

....I'm assuming the "the little bits" is the front splitter with intake slots - It replaces the black plastic on the stock GTI (different on the Ed30). In which case, it's made by OSIR and only available via TTSroadsport (Justin, and you can mention my name) 01234 855 555. Don't ask me how much - I've spent so much on mods that I've lost track without going through my paperwork.

Yep, although superbly smooth, I still prefer my GTI. The Scirocco isn't a hot hatch!

....We'll probably all get used to that slightly odd rear. Overall she's very rounded and smooth both to drive and look at.

Good friend Dan, modded Mk4 R32, biker and snowboarder, and a dab hand with Photoshop has done this version. It just needs a VW badge somewhere, preferably black : -

....Yes, I agree about the comparison if modded but whereas I think the Scirocco would be smoother and handle so well, it wouldn't be so edgy and not quite so much fun.

Good review RR :afro: I was reading in a mag that the scirocco was going to be the new Audi TT

Also the 2.0T engine is not the same as the golf GTI 2.0T engine

....Hmm....I don't see the Scirocco as being "the new Audi TT" - The Audi is much more obviously a two-seater fastback. The Scirocco, though not as flexible in use of rear seating and boot as the 3-door GTI, is far better in that aspect than the Audi. In my opinion.

The engine is different and seems to be the same version as in the latest American GTI's but I don't know the details at the moment. The DSG was the most seemless I've ever driven and the engine extremely smooth and linear on power delivery, to a point where I would personally prefer to have more turbo sensation. But having a long chat with Kev at Revo yesterday evening, I know that he could remap it to be more aggressive or sporting.

....I have purposely not read the reviews until my test drive. I would agree that the Scirocci is very agile and the power delivery is the same in performance power (to the standard GTI) but she's almost too smooth and with not enough turbo sensation for my personal taste.

I can't imagine a lower powered diesel version and doubt VW will bring out a hot version in the current knee-jerk eco climate, but who knows.

Well done RR, enjoyed that write up, so basically the Scirroco is not best suited to petrol heads like us.... dont get me wrong i do like it especially the wheels  it just seems a more elegant refined type car that your mum and dad would buy and use at the weekend to go to pimms parties!

im just gona save my pennies for the GTI-R i think....

Yeah the mag said Audi WERE going to use the this car as the new TT ant one point. I really dont know TBH just what is said.

Love the photoshop image :afro: I think the Scirocco is going to be awsome with a few mods

....That's it in a nutshell!

We have to realise that, except in the over £40k market, car manufacturers have to offer cars that will result in higher sales and that us 'petrolheads' are a minority in the bigger picture.

However, we already know that the engine is highly tunable and the great success in racing at The 'Ring 24hr, will spawn some nice mods. But for me I still need those three back seats for my teenage daughter's jailbait friends and the occasional load carrying capacity, not that I use those features all the time, but it's never a problem. In standard form, the new Scirocco is an excellent and well built car but not a "driver's car". IMO.

Oi!

The 'rocco is definitely a "grower". I was disappointed when VW opted out of the showy brushed steel front, but now I kinda like it

Still needs more power and 4WD would be the "Killer App"

....I'm not sure I agree - On the day and in the dry road circumstances I had, I couldn't get her to wheelspin and her cornering was unexpectedly good. The car needs to be modded to become more tactile and doing a remap alone won't achieve that. Get a drive and see what you think.

Fantastic write-up.

I've never liked the Scirocco as much as everyone else. Side-by-side with GTI, the only things I do like are the low profile and the alloys. Doesn't really appeal to me - I guess it's just horses for

From what I can work out, I think what bugs me the most is the front nose, in between the headlights. The rear, as someone has said, looks like the rear end of a Renault Megane and an Astra. Side profile isn't too bad.

Strange how they have chrome-trim everywhere but not on the pedals.

Its the same platform as the 5 so the mounting points will be the same. I imagine you will have to de-activate the gimmick comfort/sport suspension option in the ECU to stop fault codes being thrown up. Doubt its any more complex than that.

Personally I'm not a fan of the looks and from a side view looks a lot like an Astra.....which isn't necesserily a bad thing as I think they're quite pretty but I wouldn't want anyone to think my VW was a Vauxhall!

May I ask you a huge favour...?
The website you put the review on refuses to show on my pc. Judging from the comments I would really like to read your review and see a few pics.

I doubt South Africa is getting one but between my dad and myself we would like to read it.

Would you mind maybe emailing me the writing? Or maybe posting the thread you had there in a PM for me?
It would be greatly appreciated. I would like to see the pictures too.

Thanks

A very interesting read.

1. RR you commented on getting bored of the car whereas other journalists say its awesome to drive and gives a good buzz. In all fairness do you think that having a Milltek and mapped GTi was a contributing factor to this boredom?

2. The Gti engine is well known for its torque and almost zero turbolag. How was this in comparison? Obviously its not a GTi but Im curious.

3. You said the suspension was rather high... Did they remove the spacers??   OR maybe just the suspension setting you had it on? I noticed the press pics of the car are a lot lower...

A very interesting read. I wish I was you. I want to go into car Journalism.

....Yes - Many Thanks, Top Cat - Ive been out - another 330 miles today going to and from London like yesterday.

Mike - To answer your questions....

1. I hear on good authority that the Press Scirocco's "have been played with" (the actual words!). Yes I think that the Scirocco is great to drive but not "awesome" - My friend's VW Racing-prepared Mk5 GTI is "awesome"! The Scirocco is very good indeed but unfortunately I couldn't help compare it with my modded GTI, especially as the engine and steering wheel and DSG is so similar. Someone other than an enthusiast might find my GTI too raw by comparison. Yes, I'm sure that my remap and Milltek contributed a lot to my relative boredom.

2. Good torque and zero turbo lag - Just like the GTI. The DSG feels outstandingly smooth - Too smooth imo - It feels too much like an automatic.

3. The magazine shots I've seen show the car with similar wheelarch height to the one I drove. It all works very well but just doesn't look cool!

As a very comfortable fast coupe which is extremely smooth and holds the road well, the new Scirocco is great and I think competes with the Audi TT in some ways, but if want a more fun and tactile car you'll have to mod it and more than just a remap.

That's just my opinion - Others will think differently but I'm not a motoring journalist and can't be 'bought'.

Thanks RR.

I have to agree the back near the window etc is very similar to the new 1 series sedan and the first car with that design in the rear was of course the new Audi A4. I think that VW is trying to follow that design but got it sort of wrong.

I love how wide and mean it looks.

Was round at the dealers today and saw one in the flesh.  I think the interior looks brill.  Love the seats, although not sure why they didn't put stainless steel on the pedals?  Not totally convinced about the exterior.  The front badge doesn't look right and the rear isn't my cup of tea, too much Vauxhall.  The wheels look well.  It was in black so not sure if another colour would look better.  All in all it looks quite sedated, not as aggressive as the GTi but each to their own.  Spoke to one of the salesmen and the earliest you can get one is February!

Also got a dv valve (thats a different thread!) when I was there.  Getting it fitted this saturday. My brothers 140 tdi is quicker at the moment

Well, I've been down to the local dealers and they have a glorious RED Scirocco in the showroom. It looks verrry nice, although I agree that the arse end looks a bit heavy. One think that immediately drew my attention was that on 18" alloys it sits on 235 section Pirelli tyres rather than the 225 section on the ED30/GTI.

I also managed to nick blag one of the first batch of poster brochures for the launch night

Red and tan leather.....mmmmmmm

Not tempted RR?

Haha I also managed to re-locate 3 of these, they have the proper brochures now in Listers so I re-located one of those too!

Don't know if it's been posted yet, but you can configure your own on the VW site now too.

....The standard Salsa Red looks verrry dull!

But Firespark is the best red : -

That bulbous bum looks better in that colour imo.

No, not tempted - The 3-door GTI offers much more, let alone a 5-door. The Scirocco is neither one thing nor the other for my needs.

Great write up & pics Robin,

I’m still not convinced yet with the styling. However the Mk5 took over 4-years to grow on me.

Work is manic at the mo, so no spare time to surf the forums. Be back up to speed soon.

ED starting to loosen up now, handles really well at high speed on my private runway, needs a clean though.

Keep smiling Hotrod

It does look lush in that Firespark Red - those wheels also suit it nicely and the gap between wheel/arch doesn't look that bad (in those pics).
But I have to think practically now as we're expecting our first munchkin next April!
Anybody want to buy a 360?

Big gap between wheel and wheel arch though.
