So after selling my Golf 4 TDI 110 I wanted a bit more power.

So I went and bought a MK4 GTi with a 1.8 Turbo engine.

It's black with 3 doors and looked like this when I bought it:

First things first were some German plates and a rear aero wiper...

After Meguiars 3 stage products she looks like this:

And then I went to a VW meet and it rained:

This caused problems. Firstly the cover covering the pollen filter was broken resulting in a wet passenger side floor!

Ever since this has happened the car has been struggling with it's electronics, which resulted in me breaking down and being VERY unhappy.

So I got a tow to a garage and ended up with a new fusebox on top of the battery. Got it sorted at mates rates so weren't too bad.

Just fitted black interior handles to remove some of the wood inside  and GolfGTI stickers on the side windows.

Tomorrow she's going to get washed, clayed, polished and then waxed. So expect some pictures.

Things I want to do soon are:
stubby aerial
Paint interior trim piano black
And get my German plates on.

Then I'll start looking at lowering, remap, and so on...

Forgot to mention I replace d a faulty CD changer too...

Ordered stubby aerial and bought a new tyre today.  :undecided:

And gave it a good wash/clay/polish wax

Just ordered some plain black interior pieces in a war against the wood trim. I ordered:
-air con surround
-cup holder cover
-ashtray cover
-diagnostics port cover.

Need an R-Line gear knob to match.

I got fed up of the dirty wood trim but didn't want to go down the aluminium route. So I replaced the handles with black ones from VW speed. And ordered some interior trim from the dealers although I can't order the side strips as I didn't want a whole new radio cage!

I've got the part numbers for plain black trim if anyone wants them?

This is how it started out  (NB the camera has made the wood look even worse):

And after 15 minutes and £22 it looks like this:

Now when I get spares for the side trim I'm going to spray them metallic black (same as my car) and get the R-Line gear knob and hopefully it should look good. I wished the black trim I bought was a bit blacker though  May get a new DIN sized cubby hole as mine's a bit scratched.

Todays efforts:

I was expecting my DV to arrive today and was going to fit it but it hasn't so I guess it'll be here on Monday.

Firstly I decided to fit my German plates that had been sitting in my bedroom:

During (how I wish I could drive with no front number plate...)

After:

I was still bored so decided to remove the rear 'GOLF' badge, so i heated it up with my sisters hairdryer prised them off and spent the next 45 minutes removing the glue left behind. Used lots of water and in the end Meguiars Paint Cleaner helped remove the last bit that were a pain to remove.

Before:

After:

I've also finished spraying the ash tray cover so I'll fit that and get pictures of my finished interior trim at some point.

Next plans:
-await arrival of DV and then fit
-decide and buy a new gear knob
-buy new mats
-buy some Anniversary sills.
- I have also been eyeing up the 312mm upgrade and the sharan badge modification to smarten the rear!

that looks cool although I want to keep my rear wiper. And i'm still unsure of doing the badges black, I may use the smaller Sharan badge but really unsure of black.

That's what the centre console now looks like. I'm trying not to spend money on the car until end of September so in the meantime I may smooth my airbox and stick a decent panel filter in. Also looking around for an AUM rocker cover to polish up!

Arty pic took this morning:

Right been thinking about what to do next and come up with this list:
Gear knob
TT Short shift
replace missing battery cover from the stealers when I get the part number*
Front aero wiper conversion*
Anni Sill covers*
Toureg torch*
Pipercross Panel Filter
And Forge Hoses

This is not in any particular order although the ones with the star should be sorted shortly.

And ended up with this:

pretty cool (thoughthe photo dont do them justice) for just over a tenner! and i've ordered some cheap side repeater ones from eGay.

Bought a boost gauge and pod off eBay for £36 but punted them both back on for nearly £20 profit as I didn't like the style of it.

Oil light came on few days ago and I immediately topped it up and the light still on so just ruling out a few things as the sump may need to be dropped :O

I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and the oil light has gone.

Picked up my battery cover and fitted that so looks a lot smarter in the bay:

Not sure what I'm going to do next as christmas expense has set but I have got a 10% off anything on ebay so may use that on something...

O and booked the motor in for a remap!!! :)

New temp sensor fitted. Will find out if it cures the problem later.

Well it didn't unfortunately. So new thermostat soon I should think.

Currently bidding on a nice item on ebay so we shall see if I win that!

Was holding back on boost so took off engine cover and the pipe off the top of the DV was kinked so unkinked it and it's so much better.

Bought a thermostat and coolant today to attack possibly on Monday morning. Hope it cures the problem.

Not sure what after that, an intercooler hose needs replacing so maybe a set of silicon hoses.
Title: Re: T_J_G - MK4 Golf 20vT
Post by: T_J_G on 05 January 2009, 12:50
thermostat replaced and done the trick. Happy days.

Engine management light came on and the silicon hosing on top of my DV had split right open! Replaced that and all good!

Ordered a VAG COM cable the other day.Waiting for it's arrival.

Got lots of ideas whizzing around my head about what to do next...

I want some JustMatz mats made up at some point.

But wondering whether to get a decent head unit, amp and build a sub into the boot arch, or whether to replace my boost pipes with Forge or similar ones as my intercooler hose is on it's way out. Or just save the money for wheels/tyres/adapters/coilovers.

Also want to sort out a decent gear knob and gaiter at some point.

I have replaced one wing mirror glass, and now have one heated mirror! Not sure why the other one doesn't work. I'll swap them over at some point and maybe replace the other side.

I also need a new driver side door seal as mine keeps catching on the door and creates extra wind noise.

I'm still keeping my eyes peeled for bargains.

Other short term plans include:
some decent mats - was going to JustMatz but they want £55 delivered! So may go for a cheaper option.
PiperX Panel filter.

Post by: T_J_G on 31 January 2009, 17:55
I took off the door seal and re-fitted and it isn't getting caught anymore. :)

Got bored so deciding to get things together to make a sub enclosure.

Waiting for half of the bora vent kit to turn up, got drivers side and passenger side vent for £20, just need the centre one...

Just received some bits for the sub build:
carpet,
adhesive,
brushes,
Wiring terminal

Which leaves me to get these:
18mm MDF board
Fibre Glass kits
Masking Tape
Sub, Amp and Wiring Kit.

Hopefully going to tackle it in a few weeks (dependant on weather) , as I need to get the car machined polished as well seeing as I bought a machine polisher.

Also bidding on a few goodies on eBay so we shall see if I win any...

Light glass wasn't in the best condition. So it's not going on the car.

Sourced a full set of Bora vents. :)

Also bought the 18mm MDF for my sub box. Ideally need to buy a fibreglass, wiring kit and sub now.

Not too much to update as money been really tight.

Had my car RR'ed and it got 198.8BHP with a flat spot after 3.5k :( so I've possibly got a boost leak, may be coming from my burnt intercooler hose, Ivor has given me another one so may put that on or source a full hose kit from the likes of Forge.

Waiting for my Bora vent loom to come, potentially sorted an exhaust for the future. :)

Just ordered a boost gauge for the car so that should be here soon, not sure how to mount it, whether to order a pillar mount (£80 though!), can't go down the vent route as my Bora Vents will be in soon and don't really like the look of much else!

Then I won a V6 rear valence on eBay today so that should come pretty soon ready for a new exhaust.

Fitting of the boost gauge will happen on Wednesday, the panel filter probably tomorrow morning.

Received the mount this morning so went over VW/D4N's house (cheeers Doooood) and installed my boost gauge. didn't get chanc to wire in the illumination so i'll save that to another day. Not entirely sure where the cable go anyway.

So it looks like this:

Running 20 VAC and peaking at about 16-17PSI then calming off to 15PSI

Quite happy with mine and Dans efforts, and surprised it worked first time!

Was on my way to work yesterday and Coil Pack 2 decided to commit suicide. Waited an hour for RAC but luckily he had one on him (not gen VW though)

Really annoying though.  Stupid b***** car!

Should be sorting my Bora vents and W8 light on tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday and may pop along VW and get some Aero Blades and a sharan badge to paint up.Then i'll probably stop buying littlke things and start looking at Coilovers/arbs and wheels.

Had a full oil and filter change this morning. Was waiting for some things to turn up but they're out of stock. Never mind, they'll get fitted when I return from my holiday.

EDIT:Not worth a new post for this, fitted the bit behind the centre bora vent I was missing after picking it up from the dealers.

On my return from holiday I picked up my Forge Boost Hoses that had been delivered while I was away. (top price & service from Damian @ DPM!)

Managed to fit the two easiest ones on top of the bay today as time wasn't on my side, not sure when the rest will be fitted but probably a week on Wednesday with a hand from Dan ( ;) )

Not sure what's next for the car, it depends if the hoses solve the problems I'm having if not then it's a new MAF and 4 new coil packs!

Right, quite a productive day today, managed to fit the new Forge Intercooler to TB hose as the VW one had burns in it.Only one more to do so that can be done soon, not bothering with the small one in the wheel arch as mines in perfect nick and n one will see it anyway!

During fitting:

Fitted:

I bought another boost gauge holder for one on the A-pillar as IMO it looks better, so fitted that. Fits nice but if i'd paid the £90ish RRP I'd still feel a bit cheated to be honest.

Fitted:

And yes it needs a clean but I ran out of stuff, a job for tomorrow!

Also noticed a massive kink in the vac pipe leading to the boost gauge so cut that bit off and it's all good.

Couple of small things to add, rubbish picture but they're Powerflex dogbone mount bushes

These arrived in the post thanks to Rhyso! Only been used for about a 1000 miles so they'll go on the dogbone picture above ready to go on the car!

Also bought this as the seal on my oil cap was rubbish:

Right things to do before Christmas. Going to sort the maintenance out so can get on with other things after Christmas.

Fit Oil Catch Can - bought waiting for it to arrive, will replace split hose. (SM Catch Can) - Being fitted Saturday?
New spark plugs - bought but not fitted (Bosch Super 4's)
New rear discs and pads - bought but not fitted
New front discs and pad - upgrade to 312mm
two new front tyres - FITTED - Goodyear F1's
new fuel filter
get a spare coil pack to keep in the car.

Hopefully then it will be spot on for the rolling road day in January.

Other jobs:
-fit dogbone mount - got replacement bolts.
-fit rocker cover - got gasket

And then maybe start looking at fun things again instead of maintenance.

So after selling my Golf 4 TDI 110 I wanted a bit more power.

So I went and bought a MK4 GTi with a 1.8 Turbo engine.

It's black with 3 doors and looked like this when I bought it:

On the flip side, part should be here soon for arm rest to go in.
Won some door seals on eBay for £7.99 delivered as my drivers side is fooked!

Little Update.

My old Forge 007 was a bit ugly so decided to replace it with the better looking kind :)

Old one :

Old and new together:

New one fitted:

Got a leak inside the car so I've ordered the bonnet release cable grommit, so I'll fit that on Tuesday and then if it cures it strip the interior out for a good clean.

More goodies on their way! :afro: Nothing too major though.

Got this little lot to fit :)

aero wiper arms and blades
carbon style induction kit
312mm upgraded front brakes
standard pads and discs for rear.

Awaiting calliper carriers.
Title: Re: T_J_G - MK4 Golf 20vT
Post by: T_J_G on 08 April 2010, 09:49
Wanted to fit my 312mm front brakes and new rear discs and pads today. But the 312mm carriers haven't turned up so decided to just sort the rears for now. It seems the carriers are lost in transit somewhere...

What a pig of a job, the new pads didn't come with these little metal clips that on one side kept falling off and made it near IMPOSSIBLE to fit the pads in. Took about 5 hours to do the whole job with the other side taking about 30 minutes. It was chucking it down all day and very wet.

Meanwhile I tried to find my leak, the bonnet release grommit was fine so reinstalled it and used a lot of silicone so around it so I can rule that out.

Fitted my new wipers while I was at it, a great improvement. So quiet and efficient. Happy days!

Old discs  :lipsrsealed:

New wipers:

And I'm left with a car that won't rev below 1300 RPM.... :undecided:
Title: Re: T_J_G - MK4 Golf 20vT
Post by: T_J_G on 21 April 2010, 11:28
The idle problem fixed itself :afro:

I fitted the induction kit:

Left it on for a few days as it was quite fun, but removed it in the end so I'm back to standard.

Ordered some more 312mm carriers so I hope these turn up :afro:

Few things on my list over the coming months:

New rear lights
Suspension

Things are gradually moving but still restricted money-wise unbtil I go fulltime at work in May. I'll fit the 312mm front brakes when the carriers turn up and still need to replace my driver side door seal with the replacement I have, and fix my broken wing mirror.

Fitted the cheapo chinese gear knob, going to sand the chrome bit down and give it a lick of black paint.

Thinking about ordering the whole bit that the gear knob sits on as mine is broke and all scratched.

Not much to report :(

Ordered some bits that broke when fitting the catch can. also booked the car in to have a new exhaust reducer fitted and have the system re hung so it sits better. And then it's the dreaded MOT in a weeks time.

Got some lows :

Front ARB was catching so have had to raise the front and left it like this for the evening.

Pics from fitting:

After they'd settle I adjusted then today and put the front up more (to stop ARB and DS fouling) and put the rears up too. Now it sits level, also had a bad exhaust knocking so tried to get hold of the rubber mounts today but couldnt so cabled tied one of the old one until I can fit the new ones on Thursday.

Also ordered some more goodies!

also put on a new MAF and the cars seems to be a bit happier now with regards to the engine light coming on.  Also replaced the back backbox mount and got the front one sat in my car waiting to be done next week at some point. Not sure if it'll sort the exhaust out, if not I may get it booked in for a Milltek or sort something out. Got dogbone mount to sort next week as well.
