My 8v digifant has just failed it MOT
1. Shock absorber leaking
2. Chassis leg has excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength withing 30cm of the body mountings.
3. (5.8%) exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive.
4. Wheel bearing excessive play.
5. Both front lower suspension arm bushes deteriorated.
6. Brake valve leaking.
7. Both rear brake pipes corroded.
It looks worse than it is, i wanted new shocks and springs all round anyway so that sorts no.1. The chassis leg and lower arm bushes will need doing by the garage. The valve and brake pipes are easy enough to so myself.
But what about the exhaust emissions, How can this be sorted?

A good tune up via RJ's guide in the MKII section.

Im waiting for the garage to get back to me with a price. I might not be able to justify fixing it if its too costly as the tax ran out today too.
This could be the end of the GTI
-
fix it yourself or don't buy such an old car.

 Bit harsh. What if he had no choice but to get a cheap car?
-
mine too
rear flexy twisted (has been for how many years???)
2 brake pipes corroded, valve to calipers
steering rack gaitor
number plate bulbs.
Already done the bulbs and gaitor.
Doing brake pipes on sat morning, only prob is, I've no MOT and tax runs out tomorrow and can't renew cos I've no MOT till sat - what do you do eh - fingers crossed I don't get pulled!

I can do the majority of it myself but dont have the equipment to do welding on the chasis leg, fit the lower arm buses or sort the emissions out. The garage never got back to me today but i may have to seriously consider selling this car cheap or breaking it  such a shame
-
you don't need equipment for wishbone bushes, just buy new wishbones from gsf or eurocarparts with the bushes already pressed in. end of hassle.

there are many newer and cheaper cars i can think of than a mk2 golf.
-
your looking at about £40 for a tune and last time i bought a bottom arm (it was for a fiesta)but was about £15 as for welding try some different garages as it may not be as bad as the fail sheet makes it sound
also you have to weigh up the cost of replacing car against cost of repairing it
-
Buy mine off me
with 12 months MOT!!!

probably worth posting your location, id rather help someone out if i could then let a robbing garage take the money.
im sure others would also do the same.
-
dude i feel your pain, im having the clutch done next week and also im in need of four new tyres, four wheel alignment and tracking and thats just the start of it
byebye savings
love the car though, nothing else feels as purposeful or fun
-
Thanks Dolly, im based South Wirral. The garage never got back to me today either
Here's the trouble maker anyway......I thought the handling felt abit pants

photo of rust around chassis leg?
-
It looks tidy enough to save. I've saved worse. Look at my project.
If it is money that is an issue, then put it on a SORN and repair it as and when time and money allow. The major concern would be the rot around the chassis leg, but still repairable provided its done properly. Don't scrap it, its worth more than that! (Judging from the picture.)

Right i got the car up on ramps this morning to check the MOT fails, pretty easy to spot as the guy put yellow chalk on them. Check out the pics.
Chasis Leg, a clear hole so will need welding...

Brake valve, i thought it was just the bleed nipple but its this thing...
Brake Lines, i thought it was just the short pipes but its the long thin lines running from the valve...

Do GSF sell the valve and lines? what are their actuall names because im having trouble finding them.
-
'brake bias valve' and 'brake lines' as far as i know.
that hole in the chassis leg wont cost a lot to fix, looks like someone jacked the car up with a trolley jack without using wood.
-
Off the shelf brake lines are a bit of a rarity as most places make them up to order. I bought myself a kit off ebay and make my own, sooooo much cheaper and quite fun!
Bias valve thingy must be available off the shelf, but someone breaking a MKII should be able to sort you with a cheap used one.
THe welding? SHouldn't cost much at all, £30 maybe?
[bodge mode] In the past I've been in a similar situation and I fibre glassed up the whole then re undersealed both sills, the bake lines I cleaned up and undersealed too. COst me nowt as I had underseal in the shed. Took to a different garage for another MOT and it passed. [/bodge mode]

I would have offered to come help (as I have a few times to other people) but you're like 3 hours & 180 miles away  I'd sand back the brake lines a bit and under seal them and clean up the bias valve a bit and put a thin coating of under seal on. While you're under there you might as well sand back and under seal the rest of the car where you've some rust as that may cause you problems in the future.
My mother's bug was half fibre glass  The passenger floor was pure fibre  still passed all it's MOT's (roadworthy test in SA).
-
No, I would replace the brake lines and not disguise them! Safety is the issue here. Brake pipe kits are available and not difficult. I made up all the brake pipes on my Cobra and it only took a couple of hours to do.
-
I agree, thanks for the reply guys but theres no way im bodging it.
-
That looks very tidy and would be a shame to scrap it
With the brake lines most spares places will make up the copper lines if you take them the old ones to make copies from
-
I will put a spanner in the works but do not be worried by this, the probable reason for your high emissions are the valve syem seals. This is not a very big job and you can do it without removing the head, not expensive(£13aprox), they are a normal fault and common to high emissions.
The welding is just time assuming and not too expensive. If I was close to you then I would come across and help.
-
Oh god not another job!  are there any guides/threads to help me with the valve stem seals?

I wouldnt go worrying about valve stem seals just yet, as mentioned before make sure its set up properly first using the guide by rubjonny in the faq

Right ive dug up my old thread to let you guys know how im getting on, its nearly time to put her in for an MOT again, so far ive....
1. Replaced suspension with Boge gas dampers & Eibach springs.
2. Replaced front wishbones and bushes.
3. Replaced front wheel bearing.
4. New rear brembo discs & Pagid pads (i had an advisory on the discs).
5. New vag exhaust system as i didnt like the Scorpion dtm that was fitted.
6. New 10w 40 oil, vag oil filter and coolant.
7. New vag rubber mats :D
9. Resprayed red gti grill stripe ;)
8. Today i finished the timing & Co2 mixture via rubberjohnnys guide (cheers mate ;)), I bought a gasterster and timing light off ebay to do this, also fitted a new rocker gasket and gave the cover a general clean up.
Ive only been round the block but the car seems to run and handle fantastic now. I still need to replace the rigid brake pipes and a new brake bias valve which i have.
Ive also decided to fit new tyres as ALL of them have slow punctures! wtf!
Then the cars ready to go into the garage for the welding on the chasis leg and an MOT :D
When its passed it'll be getting 4 wheel lazer alignment and a damn good clean :D Cannot wait!

Good job man, the rear wheels can't be adjusted for camber or toe because they are just fixed to the rear axle in one positon only, but they can be tapped about a few mm left or right when the plates on the axle to chassis are loosened. But the front ones can be adjusted slightly, so go for a 2 front front wheel alignment, the people doing it should know that MK2 rears can't be done.
I've seen a thin plate (I think it's only nylon or something) that can be bought in America which allows toe & camber for the rear wheels, but its mostly American trackday people that have used them. It fits between the stub axle & axle itself, and it has various wedges of thickness to it, so you turn it around according to the instructions, to apply whatever toe & camber you need.
I love it when I go to the MOT station, because they know they can't bullsh!t me for extra work/money, as they know I fix my own car :smug:. If it's just the lights need adjusting or CO2 screw to pass, then I'd let them do it to retest it (Well it was the only things to be done to it last year anyways).
But yeah, it's always good sorting your own car out :afro:

Nice one buddy. Feels good knowing that you have saved another one doesn't it?
Incidently, don't take any notice of stupid comments like the one Sharpie put in. You do what you want to do and comments like that are neither requested or warranted.
