My next mod, booked in with my local VW dealer on Thursday...

Does anyone know if the dumpstops supplied have to be fitted...
Will post some pictures when it's done...

nice, whats the dealer charging ?
-
will you be using the standard shocks?
btw it's bumpstops not dumpstops.
-
I can't believe they agreed to do it. Whenever I go in they always tell me " we've never done one of those before, so it might not work. Oh and it'll be expensive"

I get the same, I guess some dealers are good, some aren't so good

He matched the price Ricci Concept quoted... £180 incl vat with 4 wheel alignment as well.

Yes for now.....
dumpstops.... slip of the finger

If a main dealer can't change some springs and align them then there's something wrong... Yes main dealers sometimes cock-up but they always get it sorted in the end, but thats the start of another thread... LOL

i did my old ones myself, £110 for the springs, bargain job :-)

are they alligning the car on the same day as fitting ?
-
182, is it an easy job and do you need any special tools?
I'm looking at getting the Eibach ones (not sure of the name of them) that lower by 10 to 15mm as dont want to go too mad, and keeping standard shocks on. Looking for a lower look, and decent comfort when driving normally, but a bit better handling when pressing on.
My dealer charges over £90 per hour labour rate so I guess it would be a lot more than £180 fitted.
The alignment should be done a while after the springs have "settled in" IMO.

i didn't need special tools, just the normal spanners, the springs werent under much load on the ST so no compressors were needed, it took just over 2 hours for the two of us (backs were 10 mins each), if you don't know what your doing its best to get someone who knows there stuff to do them

warrentee issues?
-
warrentee issues?
with my old car ?
-
no with lowering the GTI
my dealers are twits, so wanted to know what they have said to you guys?
-
do VW do a kit as an option ?, on the ST the Eibachs was an option hence covered by warranty
-
dont believe so no.
-
no with lowering the GTI

Mines out of warranty as from June 28th.
Are they alligning the car on the same day as fitting ?
Yes... I have asked various people like Ricci Concept, Awesome GTI & AMD and they all say the same... YES
Personally I would of thought it would be best to leave it while they settle in a bit, but they said it doesn't matter... Like I know best, Yeh !!!
That's why they are fitting them and I'm not....

odd that as i was recomended by various Ford specialists to do mine after settling a bit ?, i guess the VW bods know best though
-
I left mine for about a week before getting the alighment done.
I spoke to a guy at JBS this week who asked his dealer for a price to fit some FSD's to his Ed30 (he wanted to improve the ride which he said they did just that), and they quoted him ... £500! Yes and thats just for fitting them.
-
What were you doin at JBS neg
-
I'm surprised the dealership has agreed to fit the suspension! I asked my local dealers about mods to suspension/brakes/remap etc and the guy laughed at me and said "no chance - your warranty will be void." Went to a seat dealership and they were offering remap (300bhp+) to any cupra for £500 with warranty intact, with other mods as well. Why are vw so stingy?
-
....VW dealers vary enormously - Mine will do almost anything I ask them if they feel they can do it well and without overcharging me.
Ray West both advised and later fitted my suspension and insisted on doing a laser alignment check after the suspension had settled. I'd be a total fool not to take the advice of someone who is so experienced.

Just something small made by Autotech

Good springs, on my 3rd set now

I know what you mean, but priory park wouldn't do armrest, "vents don't work when we do it" and £900 so didi it myself.
Wouldn't do highline, claimed they couldn't code new clocks, couldn't explain how they changed clusters when damaged or broken, wouldn't do MFSW.
I gave up and am going to polish the puppy with a soon to be aquired g220 instead.
-
My new springs are on the way too  I will doing half myself and getting a local tuners to do the other half....thing is, i cant remember if its the front or rears that are the easiest :undecided:
Either way, im having a 25mm drop all round so should be nice and low. price well i dont want to boast but to give you a clue its less than 1p!!!
-
i would like the car lower too, but 1) insurance 2) the front valance already catchs on things so couldnt go any lower... i duno how you guys get away with it
-
I've not had any problem with this car before or after lowering - the Leon Cupra R, now when I had that my god it was a problem - i got through 3 front splitters and that was only because I put up with a marked one for so long inbetween each one.

Follower was ok too but as I had a new one I swapped anyway.

Tell you what you'll love it when it comes back, will look more planted and will feel firmer to drive too.
-
Are you going to lose the mudflaps as they will be a lot lower?
-
Are you going to lose the mudflaps as they will be a lot lower?
No... Unless there's a problem with them, which I can't see there being one. plenty of clearance from the edge to the ground.
Martininwillerby

when you picking it up
-
when you picking it up
Dealer has just rang to ask if they can keep it till 16:30 so they can do some warranty work on her.... Something to do with the wheel bearings if think he said.
More like something to charge VW for so to make up what they're charging me for fitting the springs...
Will see what they have done later...

sounds ok, your delaer must be good, as the bigger alloys might affect your warranty with other dealers

I was thinking the same thing.....
After the problems I had with my DSG in the early years of ownership I don't think they would try anything on.... Anyway I've got to know the dealership manager quite well.

Martin, can you let me know what was the issue with the bearings etc??? Mine is going in to have them looked at on wednesday ref the "moaning" post i posted a few days back.
Cheers

Yeh... Will do
Not had felt / heard anything wrong with mine apart from using too much fuel
Martininwillerby
-
It looks superb on those 19"s, only downside is that it makes the standard brakes look really weedy imho.
-
The uprated Eibach anti-roll bars will tighten the handling up even more, if you've got any money left to do so!!

Martin - You deffo need the ARB's as soon as you can afford - It's a very important part of the suspension package and will make all the difference. It's a slippery slope though!!
It sounds to me that your dealer is doing absolutely the right thing and is looking after your best interests regarding your car's safety and longer term maintenance.

I'm back...
What do you think...

First impressions are one bounch not three, A little harder ride or is it more road feed back from the car / steering. Car feels lower to sit in or is it cos i've been driving a 1.2 Polo... Will see.
Well pleased with the look of the car.
As for warranty work they did...
1. 24K6 Recall
2. Front strut top mounts and bearings fitted... Due to creaking
3. Front wheel bearings fitted... Due to noisy
Taken from the workshop print outs...
Tech said..
1 Had that done last may as well. ???
2 & 3 were done cos it's out of warranty soon and more of a precaution rather than needing it done
Still All free so no skin off my nose....
Martininwillerby
-
looks very nice
-
oh, and whats the 24k6 recall ?
-

ECU update. This came up last year when I had her serviced, so why they have done it again.

strange, oh and i guess it made sense for them to change all those bits whilst it was in pieces, they get a nice warranty job out of VW and you pay for the stripping LOL, they should have fitted them for free in the end
-
....Looks much much better, Martin. And I'm sure she'll handle better.

Just taken the wife and kids to the theatre in the town centre... They didn't notice any changes.
But got some lookers whilst driving around town on my way to Tesco's to fill her up with 99 RON.
Martininwillerby
-
Aye that looks good Martin how much did it actually drop it by then?
thats with oem shocks too.
-
most proberly from peeps think your family weighs 2 tonnes because the cars sat so low!!
-
Haven't had chance to measure it yet, but before it was 40mm Fr/Rr between top of tyre and the wheel arch.
Martininwillerby
-
that looks as low as Rosie's GTi, but shes had very bad scrapping on her tyres, i hope you dont suffer or youve done more to the suspention then she had done.
-
Look perfect now ... just the right height with the 19" CH's IMO
Who's your local dealer BTW ?
-
Only my opinion, but I reckon she'd look a lot cleaner without the mudflaps. Can someone photoshop it to see if I'm right?
-
I would say it looks just like mine but someone added two rear doors
Looks spot on mate, much better pic to show it.
-

....She might LOOK a lot cleaner without mudflaps but I think you'll find that Martin will confirm that in his neck of the woods, she wouldn't BE a lot cleaner.

I think the rear is keeping cleaner after fitting the mud flaps, but even if it didn't I like the look with them on so they're staying... Each to their own
Martininwillerby
-
That sits pretty near perfect for me. 50mm drop may be a bit much for me though. :embarassed:
I even re-laid the drive so I could have coilovers fitted (steep drive on to flat road and garage), but anything over 40mm would be too close to call.
-
Think the drop was is only 20-25mm with Eibach Sportlines. Compare that to the Pro-Kit of 10-15mm. Coilovers anything from 20-65mm.
Martininwillerby
-
Ride height now measured...
Top of tyre to bottom of wheel arch Front is 13mm (B4 38mm) or Ground to wheel arch 642mm
(http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/martininwillerby/22052008299.jpg)
Top of tyre to bottom of wheel arch Back is 15mm (B4 42mm) or Ground to wheel arch 647mm
(http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/martininwillerby/22052008298.jpg)
As for ride quality, It is a firmer ride with less / hardily any body roll at all.
My only watch out is when the car is loaded up with people like today, when I took the wife and three teenagers plus two lots of luggage (18Kg each) to Humberside Airport.
Half of the tyre wall was sitting up inside the rear wheel arch. I could just get my fingers in between the inner arch and the tyre. But I felt no bumps or scrapes on the journey.
Coming home with just the wife and my youngest one I was able to press on a bit and going round corners felt like it was on tracks, with hardily any body roll what so ever..
Driven about 60 miles now and have got use to the ride and to be honest I have forgotten what the OEM ride was like... So that must be good news then.
That's it for mods for a while now... I think
Will let yo know of any changes overs the next month or so after the springs have settled in a bit.
Cheers

hum, ur on 19s so would rise ur hight from ground, if i lowered on my 18s, then its gonna kit everything i think

No... 17", 18", 19" and even 20" wheels / tyres all have a similar rolling circumference and diameter.
It's only as the diameter of the wheel gets bigger that the depth of the side wall gets smaller.
If you see what I mean.
Martininwillerby

oh
-
Looks so much better now that Martin, I need some springs!!!

That drop almost the same as mine dont you think ?

Yes pretty much, mines very similar to, think its an ideal height for looks and performance

Yeh... Your H&R's would drop by 30mm but with the FDS's on that would make it about 25mm, Just like mine
NICE......

Is it an optical allusion or are you park close to that Kerb.... Kerbs and wheels don't mix... LOL
I've got use to leaving about 6"-12" between my wheels and the kerb.
Martininwillerby
-
illusion i hope, i was scared to death of curbs with my 19 BBS
-
are 19s practical??
i mean like over the all so common speed bumps and the messed up rodes we have?
what about road noise?
19s look just right on the mk5 golf and are very tempting to buy..
maybe i need a little drive in someones mk5 with 19s
-
I was pretty close but not as much as it looks  was directly outside my house next to the low kurb.
19's do give a little more noise but worth every dB

you need a quality rim in 19" with strength (like the BBS) to cope with the UK roads

Add 40psi in the tyres as well... Saves the rims when going over those pot holes.

40 psi
-
wow, is 40 what they recommend ?
-
Isnt 40 abit high?
-
i did mine at 36 at the most, anything more was to firm
-
I run at factory 34.5psi and its fine, 40psi is to high makin the harder ride even worse
-
Cant remember exactly but I think I run 36 too or there abouts.
-
Cant remember exactly but I think I run 36 too or there abouts.
yeh, i dropped down to about 35 for comfort too
-
....I run at 35 psi / 2.4 bar as recommended.
-
only on 17's here, but run them at 36PSI, checked monthly.
-
35/36 psi here too, unless I know I'm going to be fully loaded and then I pump the rears up another 2psi.
-
Glad i asked mine were 19, 23 22 and 24 PSI
-
Glad i asked mine were 19, 23 22 and 24 PSI
Euugh
That wouldn't do the tyres any good long term if you'd left them like that
How often do you check them?
With those pressures you either never check them or you have 4 slow leaks
-
I got the wheels second hand and never checked them, hopefully be twice as fast now :D
Will check them again in a few days,
