Title: Keep your GTI out of sight....
Post by: Kermit on 08 May 2008, 13:23
Had to deal with an attempted break in early on Wednesday morning (about 2:30) - someone was having a go at the kitchen window with a screw driver and a hand drill (wooden frame), went downstairs and putting the light on seemed to scare them off.  My house is in a cul-de-sac at the far end of an estate with only one entry road into it so it wasn't an opportunity it was planned according to the police and they believe the scumbags were after my GTI   I'm not sure if the area has been targeted (I'll PM the area if anyone wants to know)  Bugger is at the moment I can't put it in the garage but also now seriously thinking of getting rid of her - I don't want the car I drive to be causing me and my girlfriend any problems with the wrong type of people!

Police sad these scumbags are getting around £500 per GTI and they are working in teams - WTF, not only are they stupid enough to steal them but they are getting a pitance for a 20K car.

Police also said get tracker fitted - I don't have it (had it on my old car - £120 a year!) but not sure I would want the car back if someone had nicked it and ragged it.

Over the next few weeks I'll be sleeping with the fat end of my snooker cue close by!

Hope the same sh!t (or worse) doesn't happen to anyone on here.  Be safe and dont have nightmares

Sorry to hear that Kermit.
Get some outside halogen security lights fitted, the type that detect movement. If possible park another car in front of it as well. I always sleep with the keys to my cars in the bedroom drawers, along with my wallet.  Dont leave keys near the front door on a key rack in clear view of the letterbox.

Its about time car crime was properly dealt with, longer harsher sentences and more Police on the streets catching criminals rather than targetting speeding motorists.

Although its relatively crime free where I live, I still have a Glock 9 for emergencies and go to Karate training just in case.

Sad times, I feel for you mate.

That sucks.

I kept my MKIV garaged, but had to make room for my surfboards so the GTI does,nt fit. After reading this I,m gonna design a roof storage for the sticks and get the GTI back indoors.

Can't have owt!

I always worry about this, just make sure you leave your keys out of sight for starters.

Garages dont seem to get used for cars these days

My car is garaged every night no matter how much of a pain in the arse it is I would advise others to do the same (if you have a garage!)

A real shame that a thing of such beauty has to be locked away but that is the state of Great Britain these days  :lipsrsealed:

Cheers guys - I didn't want to alarm anyone, just highlighting that the GTI remains desirable to the people not willing to work hard to get one (although my Kitchen window was being worked hard!). It's not nice knowing someone is creeping around on your property whilst you sleep.  Not sure what I would have done if not put the light on and walked in the kitched looking through the window at whoever it was - maybe a glock 9 would have been useful .

Police said we should have rang when we knew something was going on but with response times I wouldn't bother unless it was getting messy - as you say they would be too busy picking up speeding motorists somewhere else.

Keep my keys etc upstairs with me and the spares well hidden - will be looking at additional security measures like the lights tonight.  I have some work equipment in the garage, plus bikes etc so would need a miracle to get it back in there.  Might have to buy a house with a double garage

Pity to hear about the attempted break in.

Just my two cents although most people know it already.

Blank out your numberplates when you post pics up !! Thats the easiest way for anyone to track your car down. This is public domain.

Not good mate, might be worth investing in something like the sempal anti hijack system, or the Autowatch system, which lets them drive away with the keys but cuts the engine shortly after and lets you recover the car

Mine cant be garaged as its full of garden stuff so I have to make do with the drive way or street depeing on where the old man parks his motor. Keys are always in my room so thats not a problem. Im worried now lol :( I really dont know what I would do if I was stolen so soon after getting her.

I think this has been covered before alot, but just to air some caution, not all thieves will run away when a lights turned on, an keeping the keys up in your bedroom, f**k that! do you really want the bastards upstairs in your house, where your wife/girlfriend an kids are?

Im sad to say it cause im the last person youd expect to not put up a fight for my car, but at the end of the day, its just that, there insured, get a new one!

Id rather have no car than die or have some bad sh!t happen to my family because of it!

Sorry to hear that mate, I had a break in for my old car. Civic Type-R. Take all the measures you can dont want to scare you but the chances are they will be back. PM me the area might be the same scumbags...

Sold it not long after due to the hassel.

Garage my new GTI every night now and have the house alarmed etc. Sad state of affairs really.

Would say to anyone who does have a garage use it, £20K motor safe or the junk in the garage safe not much of a choice really!!

I'd have no hesitation to blow a 9mm entry hole in anyone entering my bedroom that didnt have an invitation or an official uniform on.

This worlds getting worse. Build bigger prisons.

Mate of mine had his RS4 and his missus's A3 knicked in the same way. He said he went downstairs and the cushins of the sofa had been laid out on the living room floor, books were placed on the floor too. The fu%&ers had broken in to his house and taken the keys for both motors. Police said they do the sofa thing to slow you down, you may spend a few extra momnets wondering what has happened. But the main message the police told him was that there would be a high chance that someone was waiting outside the bedroom door with some type of bat/knife/gun and if he had of woken.... well who knows what may of happened. The A3 was recovered but the RS4 was not.

P.S. He had advertised the car for sale on a reputable on line used car site and the coppers recon that the villans got his details from the web site!!

So is breaking and entering, theft, assault and robbery with intent etc. Even if you scare them off with it, at least they wont return.
IMO a thief who does a reccee of the area, or picks up where you live and what you drive from delivering papers/milk/post/goods/services to your house wont stop just if you have put the car in a garage.
I hear stories from the UK as I have a relative in law enforcement there.

The aim is to make it as difficult as possible for the barstewards who do this kind of thing. Which I class as being in 2 categories.

A) Crack heads who look around for these cars. Usually very lazy but will do anything to get there hands on a car i.e. smash a window and grab the keys. the solution to this is simply to keep your car out of sight, and make it as difficult as possible for them. They usually dont work so when they do have to do some graft... they like to make it as quick and easy as possible. If the car is out of sight they will simply look for a easier target.

B) Pros who will carefully pick their cars and know eaxctly what they are after and will work a cunning plan to get it. These guys are usually well organised and will be after you car, and nothing but your car (with keys). These pros will usually want to avoid confrontation and getting caught is a big no no, so will take less risks but be a little more smarter with their planning. Chances are if they are after your car they will probably get it... but will not want to be seen or risk getting a whole can of whooop a$$. Only real solution is to slow them down by taking your keys up stairs with you and some level of personal protection is usually likely to see them off.

So me keeping mine in the garage would hopefully avoid any run ins with type A, and should I attract the attention of a type B then I am hoping the sound of my garage door opening will give me the 15 secs I require to get downstairs and turn his skull into a smoothie  :smug:

Im not going to risk my life over a car... but I aint going out like that :smug:

i leave the keys in the front door, im not risking my family for a car, nobody has mentioned cctv being installed at least you can wave bye bye as the scumbags drive it off when you watch the footage. if sentences where longer for vehicle crime surely the scum would think twice .
also it very well battering these wayne kerrs but they know where you live, then things get expensive having to move etc.

You cant be serious? You leave your keys in the front door?

If you give in to crime it'll get worse. If your life is threatened and you need to defend yourself, incapacitate them with reasonable force (unsure about that part as the law is very vague) and call the Police. They are then arrested and taken to court. Battering them then letting them go, whats the point in that? they'll only do it again.

If you have CCTV footage and it identifies the culprits, it will come out in court where the Police got it from and you will have to make a statement which the scumbags will get to see.

Either way, why would you have to move?

Each one of these scumbags you put away is one less doing it to someone else. Everyone has a right to look after their property and family.

ok is it worth speaking to one of the remap companys to see if they could do something like this without remapping the car, as im not interested in blowing the back out of it, id rather keep it safe on my driveway.

theres a system called Autowatch which involves a hidden button, or pressing of switches etc, the car starts and drives away but if the combo isnt pressed the car stops after a short while, theres also a system called Sempal which does the same but uses a keycard you keep away from the keys

i always fancied the sempal, but never got round to getting one, i have had Blacjax but never got on with it (due to the need to enter codes by hand), which is why i think the sempal is the one to go for

the thing is people who steal cars dont want to get caught and will do anything to not get caught, if they do your the reason there in the nick and then they come looking for you.
where are all these gti,s that are being nicked are they being stripped or exported.
your not safe in the car either i read on tsn a couple of years ago about a chap with his young son parked in a tesco carpark who had a knife put against his sons throat and then thieving scum drove off in his gti.

I first read this thread last week and did worry about the fact I will have to leave mine on a residential car park. Then yesterday morning I got a call off my mate who was on his tenth day of GTI ownership. He woke up to find his GTI missing, went downstairs and found that they'd got in through his front door and taken his wallet, £1k watch, mobile, his mrs' purse and his key's. Its just unbelieveable that people will stoop so low to take what you work hard to get.

He hadnt helped matters by leaving his keys in the door but what is tsrange was that his dog didnt bark. He has no idea what they did but the dog cowering in the corner when a mate went round to pick him up, so it seems they have done something to keep the dog quiet.

The car was seen heading into Birmingham on CCTV in the early hours...probably the last time it will be seen in its current form. I really fear for mine when it arrives now.

PURE POND LIFE.

In my brothers old mk2 we just used to take a couple of the relays out before bedtime... which stopped it getting knicked. Unfortunately it didnt stop it from being left on the floor when some knob jockeys took all 4 of his brand new wheels!!
