Title: Test drove an S3...... oh oh
Post by: K1 on 07 May 2008, 16:25
Had my car fitted with the Kenwood DNX5220BT along with a small subwoofer to rectify the god awful stock sound system. Had some free time so ventured over to Audi and saw a blue S3 on forecourt. Asked for keys and decided to take a test drive. Turned the ignition and expected the deisel like clatter from my ed30. Instead no clatter could be heard... exhaust sounded much better than a stock gti inside at least.... not sure about outside.
Took it for a spin.... was so smooth in its power delivery.... did not feel that much slower than my mapped ed30. Wind insulation was much better, and no wheel spin whatsoever... ok it was 22 degrees but still :)
Basically wonderful car... GTI still looks nicer than the s3 externally imo... but s3 has nicer quality interior. I just found my next car :) They are launching a facelifted model which has the famous audi DRL and xenons as standard on the S3... also launching a 5 door sportback in S3 trim too for those with family :)

I wish they did the S3 convertible, my wife wants the A3 red with RS4 wheels, and I could persuade her she needs the extra power !

Nice car, I do like Audi's, good choice!

I have a sit in one of those S3's at our local Audi dealership the other week. Like you the GTI looks better visually but S3 build quality is by far better. The one thing that put me off was the driving position, no matter what I did I could get it right. It was if I was sat on the seat rather than in the seat if you know what I mean... That was one thing I really really like about the Golf GTI. To say that , the new A4 is perfect just like the GTI, If only the S3 same....

thought the engine in these was the same as the ed30 ? (except detuned), perhaps they use more sound deadening ?, i would have liked an s3 but the one i specced up was 30k !!!!

hey guys have any of you driven an audi a3 2.0T>?

same engine as the gti aint it?

i drove one last month and the whole experience is better than the gti but somewhat heavier the gti seems more playfull but interior and road noise is very good.

it was a sportback model i drove i still think audis are dull but classy.

Audi are just that little bit dearer, I looked at prices of the 2.0T A3 but it was just too much.

Had an invite for Friday night to a VIP champagne launch for the A3 Convertible  and the RS6

Checked out the figures: Twin turbo V10 580ps and 0-62.5 in 4.6secs  Mind blowing! I think I may have found my new dream ride! Move over RS4............

Thats only .2 of a second faster than the RS4 and a lot heavier/thirstier! Audi should concentrate on squeezing more power outta smaller, lighter engines. How many people are going to be able to afford a V10 soon?

Had a look at a S3 the other month. Sticker price was £31,000+   Full leather Recaros, Solar Orange. No Sat Nav though.

And guess what..............The disk bells were going rusty already  :embarassed: :embarassed:

I got to agree, I really don't know what kind of market Audi are targeting with these kind of petrol thirsty power crazy saloons.

Let's be honest, if you can afford an RS6/RS4/S8 your not going to be too worried about RFL or fuel costs!

Bring on that day

S3 5-door Sportback sounds very interesting but I expect it won't feel as nimble to drive as the GTI/Ed30.

At 45,000 miles my modded GTI is feeling like a favourite pair of comfortable shoes. Went from London down the A286 to Chichester and back with a friend yesterday - Very smooth and fast twisties in superb scenery. The car felt superb. I doubt if the S3 will have that lightness of feel.

The big RS4 and RS6 Avants are the real autobahn stormers! Lots of them in Germany. Licence losers in the UK

It was a semi-successful day - drove the S3 and didn't think it was as good as the hype (or maybe I'm just spoilt by the power of mine ). Didn't get to the RS4 - they had sold it within an hour of it going on the forecourt. Fully loaded saloon (minus ceramic brakes!) 06 reg £39k with 16k miles - smack in my price range, but gone

Guy who I took with me drives Audi's all day and says that the S3 is like an "old tub" compared with the RS4.I asked what an RS4 is like and his answer was.....

" Aww man, it really is some piece of engineering, it's in a totally different league!"

*Thinks to self - must hold out for GT-R*

Hurdy, I'm suprised to hear you found the S3 that much slower than your mapped ED30. WHen i test drove one, it didn't feel much slower than mine. Mine had more torque and that push in the seat feeling, but glancing at the S3 speedo i was suprised to find i was going quite fast with minimal effort. This in part could be the fact that i could abuse 1st and 2nd gear throttle unlike the ED30. A reason why i want an S3. What did you think of the engine/exhaust noise compared to your stock (if u can remember) system?
Oh and before someone says my ED30 must be down on power, i managed to 'own' a 350z.... think it was the 296bhp one

I will try to get some pics up of my HU and Subbie for u NewGolf. System is not overly loud... not a chav  Just wanted a system to address the lack of bass from the oem setup and got sick of the lack of track names from my ipod.

i must admit I was passing a dark grey RS4 4dr yesterday and the thing just looked plain mean. Very subtly blending into the background... and boy o boy did it sound good   But then it just gets me thinking if your gonna get an RS4... why not go for the M3. now thats a mean bit of engineering

RS4 over M3 for me any day of the week. This is all in my opinion of course, but RS4 just ooozzez class where as M3 just ozzzez cock (no offence as I know some of the guys on here have come from M3's lol).

Point taken your always going to get stick for having the M3. but after seeing it absolutely batter the RS4 round that track on TG. I would have to go for the M3... just the fact that the RWD BMW put one right over the already fantastic RS4! RS4 is also getting on a bit now... depends if you can wait for the new one to come out?? :undecided:

you decided... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=__ghLE7QtnA

Kev

It is much slower although you can keep more momentum through the corners which almost makes up for it. I think that the DSG box makes progress soooo swift that dropping back into a manual seems like driving a traction engine technology-wise
The exhaust noise does sound a little "fruitier" on the S3, but is still quieter than the Milltek at full chat

Kev, I'd like to see pics of your install too

So genious of Audi are planning on coming up with a 2.5litre twin turbo 350bhp...hatchback? Dont know for whom they are marketing their cars....and i would imagine the price would be around £35k+....personally i wouldnt pay that much for a hatch when for a bit more you can get something alot nicer!

Video played from my Ipod Video. Was gonna get the DNX-7200, but the DNX5220BT was cheaper. You get the Sat Nav, DVD/DivX playback and Bluetooth Handsfree all in one unit so no need to buy seperate modules.

all the kenwood navi units were called back as they had some sort of sticking problem when it flips down also an illumination fault

dunno if they sorted it by now was late last year as a friend of mine had to send hi sback to kenwood.

best to look into before you buy.. there was a website a knew that gave all faults and recall issues of electrical items but cannot remeber what it was called
