Title: My mk3 gti pulls and snatchs the steering wheel when hitting bumps
Post by: beccasmk3gti on 07 May 2008, 06:52
hi my mk3 gti snatchs and pulls the steering when i hit a pot hole in the road or raised iron works its really annoying. i know the tracking is out left hand down and does pull that way when u hit the bump and the tyres are budget cheap ones which dont help. so replacing the tyres for toyo proxes t1-r's and getting all 4 wheels laser aligned should that cure it?

Might be that your shocks/ dampers are stiff mate. I just had the same problem on my fiesta!
Take it to the garage

I had the same problem on my Corrado after I had the top mounts changed. It felt like the steering wheel was being pulled over to one side when I hit a bump or pothole. Once I had the four wheel alignment done it cured it completely.

I have Toyos on the front and find them pretty good.

Could be a worn bush or more likely the track rod ends giving you some grief, If it's been lowered then it really needs 3 wheel alignment done rather than just the tracking to make sure the wheels are sitting at the right camber. It's a specialist job and 9 out of 10 places that do tracking cannot adjust your camber. I got mine done and it made an amazing difference, you don't realise how bad it is until it's all straight

cars not been lowered standard ride height! had top mounts done for its mot! which was in october and has only done 1000 miles since then! i thought ball joint could have gone but will see when i get it laser aligned! tracking is way out! but like i said cheap tyres with loads of flex in the side walls dont help my car! toyo's are cheap round me 62 quid for standard gti size 205 50 15 v! got yoko a539's on my 2.5v6 omega!

if the trackings way out thats your main problem!! oh and toyos are well priced nowadays (and as good as my fulda's!!) and you can get 195/50's (which fit the gti perfectly) for under £40 each now

iv got this problem too! i had the wheels aligned, well they still werent aligned so i took it back and they sorted it, well its pretty straight now. But mine pulls to the one side too, i can also feel it pulling when i put my foot down, is this normal?
what is the camber? is it an expensive job?

Camber is looking at the wheel front on. Its vertical alignment and this can be positive or negative camber.

You also need to get the toe checked.

This is toe-in or toe-out.

This affects the steering in centering, you know if after a corner you let the steering wheel go and it should turn back to centre by itself. If it doesnt then the toe is incorrect!

Camber as with toe can change for a number or reasons including kerbing your wheels.

Any work done on the front suspension such as top mounts, wishbone bushes etc should be followed by a full realignment, and this should include measurement of toe, camber and castor. Toe and camber can be adjusted on the front wheels but castor is not easily adjusted. As for the rears you  can only adjust the total toe by adjusting the position of the rear beam mountings. Giving more negative toe to one side will give an equal amount of postitive toe on the other side, unlike the fronts which are independently adjustable.

A proper alignment will significantly change the way the car handles, turns in and reacts when you hit bumps/potholes.

I would agree however, that worn bushes will cause similar handling problems.

How much (if you can find someone to do it) are you looking at for a full alignment setup?

There is a very good place not far from you in Rainham called Elite who I use. They will check the four wheel alignment for about £18.00 and then show you the report on your current settings and tell you what if anything needs adjusting. If you need both toe and camber adjusted on the front then the full cost including the £18.00 check will come to around £70.00

They also give you another report after the set-up showing the new alignment settings.

Well worth the money IMO.
